To conquer and colonize- neither of which historically has had anything to do with accepting the existing culture and civilization you are conquering or colonizing. Pretty straight forward.

Well, generally that is true, though the Germanic barbarians who conquered and colonized the Western Roman Empire, by and large signed up to become Roman culturally and tried for a while to keep up the civilization. (Merovingian France was a fully literate society with Roman law, and was Visigothic Spain, and Alaric's interactions with the Empire weren't really any different from those of a Roman general angling for the Imperial throne.)
