Dad didn’t say much about that. He told of being in a foxhole and a very American voice begging “Joe? Joe! Where are you?” He said he didn’t answer and it was very dark. When a man crawled into his foxhole he killed him with his knife and waited until morning to see who he’d killed. It was a German.

The British soldier guarding the German POWs is awfully loose with his weapon and nazis at his back.

The German prisoners are probably so glad to be in British hands instead of Russian that they're inclined to be cooperative.

I saw a documentary of The Battle of the Bulge where US vets readily admitted they sometimes shot Germans who wanted to surrender, especially after viewing atrocities committed by the Germans against American prisoners.

Dad never said anything about it except that one story. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and had a concussion. It took him 2 weeks to wake up. That was all he ever said.

I believe there was a big massacre of captured allies around that time. They said there weren’t too many Germans captured alive for a while after that.

To hear my grandfather talk you would think it was all a great adventure but my grandmother says it was just his way of protecting his family from the horror of it. In reality he was in the thick of it and saw and did what everyone else did.

Ordinary Wehrmacht soldiers weren't shot as POW's, but Waffen SS troops had no chance after what they did at Malemedy.

Yeah. My uncle took them and said granddad was climbing steep hills to show where they had been dug in and showing places where he had been.

My Grandmother was in the WAVES and she ran the Barrycades during the shutdown.
