Drug counselor used client for sex, tried to abort baby: suit

She was schizophrenic, battered, depressed and drug-addicted. So Johanna Bernal went to the city for help.

Instead, her appointed drug counselor used her for sex and impregnated her, then subjected her to a brutal attempted abortion with his bare hands, a lawsuit alleges.

In the course of a twisted relationship that stretched four years, counselor George Alejandro allegedly kept Bernal “in a drugged state” while sleeping with her, and threatened her family members if they dared complain, according to court papers.

And Alejandro, 61, was treating Bernal despite an attempted-manslaughter conviction, not having a state drug-counseling license and two child-support liens against him, according to records The Post uncovered.

“My family has suffered a lot at the hands of this man. I live in fear,” Bernal, 35, told The Post, speaking in Spanish.

Bernal, who came to the United States from Colombia at age 9, had become increasingly depressed by 2003 after sustained beatings from a boyfriend, with whom she had three children.

Her mother, Alicia Alvarez, reached out to the city Administration for Children’s Services and was referred to a taxpayer-funded agency called Vida Family Services, which employed Alejandro.

Sounds like she would have been better off if she had just stayed in Columbia.

God, I hate that stupid “reached out” crap. Every time you make a phone call, it’s “reaching out.” You don’t contact people anymore, or call them up on the phone, or get in touch with them, you “reach out.” It seems like everyone wants to reach out, going forward.

“Reaching out” has been irritating me for years. Glad I’m not alone.

Other than that, what's the problem?

She reached out.

He reached in.

God, I hate that stupid “reached out” crap.

Yea, I know. Especially when begging, pleading and any other offensive verb you might come up with failed this young girl.........

Uh, you were referring to the plight of this poor girl weren't you?

I don't think she had any choice. As a nine year old, she was likely brought here by her family..........

A Nine year old child was sexually abused, does it matter where or when or by whom?

Are we getting so calloused around here that we don't care if a child is abused if they happen to be living here illegally thru no fault of their own?

“...an attempted-manslaughter conviction, not having a state drug-counseling license and two child-support liens against him,”

And a partridge in a pear tree.

Why was this piece of work not in jail?

The article did not mention that she was 9 when she was abused, but that she was 9 when she came to the US, and LATER, she was abused by the boyfriend she conceived 3 children with. That looks like poor life choices to me, but what do I know. THEN when she “reached out” for help, her counselor abused her.

Isn't that the Crux of the discussion here?

I don't think she had any choice.

Granted.

As a nine year old, she was likely brought here by her family..........

Well, they should have stayed in Columbia, because it seems after they got here, everything (regarding her) went to hell.

A Nine year old child was sexually abused, does it matter where or when or by whom?

No, and Yes.

Are we getting so calloused around here that we don't care if a child is abused if they happen to be living here illegally thru no fault of their own?

I don't think 'we' are not concerned about the abuse. That's why 'we' are on this thread.

I didn't say she was here 'illegally', so I don't understand why that is your issue.

I would have said the same thing if she had come here from Sweden.

Poor girl, her family came here to give her a better life and this is what she ended up with?

BCC: THEN when she “reached out” for help, her counselor abused her.

Hot Tabasco: Isn’t that the Crux of the discussion here?

Yes. Not a child of 9 being abused. You deduced that child abuse part mistakenly. Thus my emphasis on “THEN”. I perceived YOU had lost the Crux of the discussion here.

I guess that depends on what you’re reaching out FOR.
