That depends on make, model.
I looked at a 1990 and 2010 F-150 4 x 2 curb weight...
2010 model was almost 900 lbs lighter...
A 2010 Ford Taurus was heavier than a 1990...

Probably a push, both regarding size and braking ability...especially on ice. About the only things that can noticeably help are studs and tire chains.
