According to some analysts, the development of hypersonic weapons creates the conditions for a new arms race, and could risk nuclear escalation. Given that the course of hypersonic research has acknowledged both of these concerns, why have several countries started testing the weapons?
The United States is building hypersonics for two reasons. First, we want to kill people fast, without the messy danger of a global thermonuclear war. Second, we want to be able to punch through the defensive systems of peer competitors.

Other tech is already at or near the “carrier killer” threat level. The only real piece needed is overhead satellite imagery/tracking support systems.
Bill Clinton saw to it that the Chinese got the needed launch tech for those support systems.

An entire article and no mention of the Navy’s Mach 7 rail gun?
Wow.

“The only real piece needed is overhead satellite imagery/tracking support systems.”
That’s what those Russian RORSATS are for. And our “weather” satellites.
The Kursk was a carrier-killer (for example). Nuclear-tipped capability on the missiles. And as I recall, there were 12 in that class or so.
Well, yes. I was mainly talking about the Chinese, however. They are the ones who are continually expanding and advancing their naval systems.
Mach 5 arms race?
I think Speed and Racer X are taking things a bit too far. Quick, someone call Inspector Detector!
“An entire article and no mention of the Navys Mach 7 rail gun?”
When I read the title I assumed that was the subject.

Our Surrender Monkeys will outlaw these in Treaties.

No...

There was a better copy on YT once but long gone it seems.
My first thought as well. Frankly I think the rail gun and laws will be downsized over time and fitted onto flying drones which will be launched from pre-positioned submerged submarine drone carriers. The carriers will be serviced via large ships disguised as tankers with bicameral hulls. Between the hulls will be well decks that open to the sea so that the sub-drones can covertly be inserted and extracted. In fact I’m wondering if there isn’t such a covert force already.
We have succeeded in removing human pilots from aircraft.
Performance parameters without a human present can be set many times higher.

Probably because both of those technologies still have some fundamental limitations that make them difficult to deploy as any kind of comprehensive system. Perhaps when we work out the kinks, that could change, but for now, they are just novelties.
Both of those are in the preliminary/testing deployment stage.
Next up, ‘unsinkable ships that are drone operated.’
Instead of a steel hull with a lot of void space, some sort of foam matrix should do the trick.
Me too. I was expecting to see both listed. They are clearly a big part of the game changing arms race going on.
That and ‘drone swarms’.
Right, but even if they make it to regular deployment, there are limitations that make them situationally dependent, especially for lasers. You don’t want to build your whole offense/defense on something that will only work in the right situation. So, I think those will be more auxillary systems, and not forming the backbone of any wider strategy.
