I always find these ‘then and now’ assortments interesting.....everyone was wearing hats (men and women). Looked pretty cold on most of the old shots....lots of snow. The modern shots show disinterested people hunkered down and going about business as usual
Nice, thanks and Merry Christmas!
clever and enjoyable ... thanx
Thats going to take some time to review . Thank you.
Looking at these reminds me that many times I think I was born in the wrong century...
People have lived here before us and will live here after us. I like to see pictures from before I was born. What this means is that other people's lives are not dependent upon my existence.
Thank you; will save to browse later.
How come people used to wear coats in the wintertime, but now go around wearing shorts andd flip-flops? I see it all the time here in Virginia, even when it’s very cold. They look like idiots.
Good point. It's probably a function of the fact that we have climate controlled buildings and cars. Unless you are going to spend a significant amount of time outdoors, it's really no longer necessary to bundle up no matter what the weather is.
I remember visiting Minneapolis a few years back in the middle of winter when it was below zero outside. However, practically the entire downtown area is connected by climate-controlled skyways that connect all the buildings together. So you see a lot of people walking around dressed like it was summer.
I'm kind of guilty of this myself. I live in New England where the winters are harsh, but I'd probably go barefoot year round if I didn't have to put on a suit and tie to go to work. I wouldn't wear flip-flops but usually just throw on a pair of sandals when I need to be out in public. I found that going barefoot actually keeps the rest of your body warmer so you can keep the heat turned down in the house and save on oil and gas.
Yes, people dressed more warmly in the past but that was because indoor heating systems weren't as efficient as they are today and people used to get around in horse and buggy.
Women have figure out how to wear the pants in the family.
They dupe their husbands into thinking that wearing shorts year round is a sign of virility.
Ditto that.
Folks used to spend more time out of doors. They walked from place to place or traveled in unheated conveyances. Nowadays we jump out of the climate controlled automobile into the climate controlled store, house or office and spend only a few minutes, at most, exposed to the weather.
Or you could just chalk it up to global warming...
...its so much warmer now than it was then, you know. /s
I the point about improved indoor heating and limited exposure to cold, but I’m sticking with global warming. /S
Cold enough for the plucked chickens and geese hanging outdoors by the score to not need refrigeration. :^>
Nice find Ben.
Notice the man eating Fog in the back ground of the old pictures?
Obviously it has been beaten back in recent years.
It lurks, trying not to be seen.
I guess people in the past didn’t know the nature of that fog.
indeed
