The chance to own a U.S. military Humvee helped drive a record number of visitors and bidders to an online auction of Department of Defense equipment.

GovPlanet, an online auction company contracted to sell U.S. military surplus, said more than 110,000 were attracted to its auction Wednesday of 25 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles and other equipment, such as cargo trucks and crawler tractors.

The Humvees – in cargo and troop-carry configurations – were unarmored and the first surplus Humvees made available to the general public by the Department of Defense.

Is armor a bad thing? It's entirely defensive. Apparently if a union government hireling decides to shoot your family you're not allowed to make their job hard.

Yeah, and they don't want you robbing banks and driving away through a hail of gunfire in an armored vehicle that can genuinely go off road. Not to mention, these things are heavy and it makes it much harder for a police cruiser to force it off the road.

Someone bright enough to use an easily noticed slow moving Humvee to rob a bank wouldn’t have the means to buy one. People do not suddenly wake up one day and decide to commit violent crime. It’s a progression, with many visits to jail along the way. It would be better to not release them back into the public so government Rambo types can play catch and release.

I wouldn’t do that without the armored version.

Highest bid $41,000. And they all looked like ‘back-row specials’. Expensive big-boy toys in spurious condition. Looked over the other trucks, what a load of junk they offered. Made me nervous, har!
