Handgun Purchase Suggestions

Posted on 12/07/2014 9:30:46 AM PST by savedbygrace

I have a home defense shotgun, a Maverick 88, next to my bed, but I would like to also have a handgun, for more immediate defense in parts of the house other than my bedroom.

I want to spend as little money as possible for a handgun that will stop an intruder, or at least slow him down so I can get to my shotgun, but will offer the least possibility of firing accidentally. When I add that last part, I'm thinking of those videos we've all seen with a LEO demonstrating firearm safety and the handgun fires inadvertently.

Thank you.

I like this one. Reasonably priced. Taurus "Public Defender", a smaller version of "The Judge". Shoots .45 or .410.

For a person with limited familiarity with handguns, it is hard to go wrong with a 6 shot revolver in 38 Special. Get a 3-4” barrel. Load it with Federal HST +P rounds.

This should fit all your requirements.

I’d second that.

Then you don’t want to put your finger on the trigger, until you are ready to fire, regardless of the handgun you choose.

Not familiar with any guns that fire inadvertently. I guess you probably mean you’d like a revolver. In that case, look for something in .357 magnum and probably a 3 to 4 inch barrel. You can shoot .38 special loads in the same gun.

Get a double action revolver. .38 should do just fine and there are plenty for sale at gun shows. Buy from an individual owner.

Agreed. Semi-autos can be intimidating to people new to handguns, with all the moving parts. It will take range time to become comfortable with a semi-auto, and even then if you don’t shoot it from time to time you will you will lose that comfort level. Revolvers are simple, point and shoot.

If price is a major factor, take a look at the Makarov 9x18 pistol. Good used ones from CZ and FA can be found for under $200. 9x18 ammo can be had for cheaper money than most. The pistol was good enough for the KGB for decades. I bought my Bulgarian one for about $100 15 years ago. The new ones are much more expensive now.

I probably phrased that less than artfully, but I think you understand what I meant.

No matter what type of gun you get, you need to spend some time at the firing range to be proficient shooting, lean how to hand it safely, and to be able to take it apart and clean it as well
