Can you kill a sub with a nuke?
It seems pretty obvious that a nuclear explosion deep in the ocean should sink a submarine, but you need to be sure if youre gearing up for World War III. During the heyday of nuclear testing in the 1950s, the U.S. Navy made sure of its underwater atomic might with an elaborate and very loud test.
Sailors and scientists needed to know the range and lethality of underwater nuclear explosions. Would they harm the crews, ships and planes delivering the weapons? Would the ocean become too contaminated near the blast for forces to remain and fight?

I always wonder how many fish died as a result of the nuke underwater tests
A stick of dynamite in a pond was a good way to kill ALL the fish and make the pond useless as a fishing hole...
Underwater shock waves would be enormous!
if you toss a stick of dynamite 30 yards away in the air you can feel the shock but you probably wont die
Toss a stick 30 yards away in a lake and you will not survive
And thus we learn.
Then. Now?
I read about how surprisingly efficient nukes underwater were sometime back. Especially a hydrogen test which went well beyond expectations.
Nuclear depth charges aren’t worth the extra paperwork and security. The surface navy needs a real torpedo, I hope we still don’t rely on the pathetic mk-48....
They were called “Squaws”. History doesn’t have revision.
small, sea-based remote drones will be the future of submarine warfare. Nukes are far too clumsy

A suspicious game warden confronted a fisherman as to why he always returned from the lake with his creel full of fish while other fishermen usually had only a few fish or came home empty-handed. So the fisherman invited him to go fishing with him.
Once they got out to the middle of the lake, the fisherman took out a stick of dynamite, lit it, and threw it into the water. When it exploded, dead fish floated to the surface, and the fisherman started scooping them up.
“That’s illegal” shouted the game warden. “I’m going to arrest you, and you’re going to jail!”
The fisherman then took out another stick of dynamite, lit it, and handed it to the game warden saying, “look, are you going to talk or are you going to fish?”
I’ve always been curious about the subject of nuclear depth-charges.
This answers those questions.
And the conclusions are not good for our submarine fleet, which is the most survivable of our nuclear deterrent triad. A mile-wide kill zone from a 30-kt device is not encouraging.
Damn.
I would like to see the original report on these tests. Although I didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn last night, I am having a little trouble understanding how you can make water radioactive. The only remaining radioactivity should have been from the vaporized bomb casing itself. And these should have sunk as soon as they came back down to the surface.
The discussion centered around whether such a small nuclear warhead with a relatively small area of effect would trigger a full scale exchange of nuclear weapons.

I’ve seen that movie but don’t remember the title! Damned good movie!
