Who represents the State in enforcing the Law? The policeman.
Who has the authority to use deadly force to enforce the law and bring criminals to the judicial system for judgment? The police officer.
Why does a law enforcement officer wear a gun? Because he is authorized to use deadly force when required to enforce the laws of the State. He isn't wearing a deck of Time-Out cards on his hip.
The issue is rebellion from legitimate authority and criminal intent to use deadly force independent of the government. When Michael Brown chose to 1) commit theft, 2) disobey public safety laws beyond common sense, 3) rebel from legitimate authority publicly, 4) physically attack public authority, 5) attempt to take deadly force from a policeman while engaged in an attack, 6) wounded from the attack he started, 7) continued to resist arrest with intent to cause public harm, and then 8) rebelled and began to attack the officer again, then the officer had just cause to use DEADLY force to stop the criminal action.
Any suggestion the officer should have just wounded the criminal, simply promotes police brutality and in this case is very bigoted against law abiding blacks.

Shooting a firearm at someone is the application of “deadly” force. There is no such thing as “shooting to wound.” If you aren’t trying to kill the target “DON”T SHOOT.”
When the decision to apply deadly force is made, you should keep on shooting until the threat is neutralized/dead.
Using 9mm pistols makes police officers under-gunned IMO.
The 9mm round was created at the turn of the early 20th century to re-case .38 special ammo into the Colt style rimless cases so that they could be used in self loading (”AUTO”) pistols just then entering the market.
.38 caliber ammo has always been judged to be sub-standard for police/military use. (For cost reasons the powers to be keep trying to shove 9mm/.38 cal down our throats)
The use of higher capacity magazines, hollow point ammo, and training that calls for officers to empty their pistols once the decision is made to shoot all combine to declare that the shooter is under-gunned. Unfortunately these factors combine to create a public relations disaster every time a situation like this occurs.

From what I have read of the grand jury evidence and even what you said, he wasn’t able to defuse the situation.
Here is why. Brown went for the gun inside the officer’s car, there was a shot, evidence includes Brown’s blood in the car, gun shot residue on Brown’s hands.
Even what you say proves he couldn’t defuse the situation. If he shot 12 times and Brown was only hit 6 times, that means that Brown kept coming shot after shot. Brown was shot in the arm and other parts of his body and kept coming. The only way to stop him before he took Officer Wilson’s life was to kill him.
I don’t disagree with your point that it would be nice if we could deploy a non-lethal way to stop offenders without the need to kill them. For example, we have tried tasers, people die from heart attacks. In this case, I am not sure the taser would have stopped this kid. I had a hound once that was a bit of a barker. We tried a shock collar on him. Didn’t phase him.
And place the looting and BS protesting at the feet of the right people. The race agitators in this country, period. They don’t come out when white kids are shot by police. They don’t come out when black kids are killing each other at horrific rates. They just come out when they think it gives them power.

Cops aren’t trained to shoot “wings” (legs, arms, etc.). It’s a myth that they are taught to shoot to injure.
We also aren’t taught to shoot to injure. If you have to use your gun/weapon, you should use it to eliminate the threat. Eliminating the threat means just that.
