Bubonic Plague Spreads in Madagascar

Madagascar said Monday it was trying to contain an outbreak of plague -- similar to the Black Death that swept medieval Europe -- that has killed 47 people and is spreading to the capital Antananarivo.

Plague is, interestingly, endemic to the western United States. It is found naturally in rodents in the Southwest. We average around 10 cases a year.

When treated properly, the mortality rate for plague is about 11%. High, but not an automatic death sentence.

Plague is quite amenable to antibiotic treatment. I wonder why those 47 people died. If you ever had the fortune of living on the Mother Continent, the phrases "It's Africa" and "West Africa Wins Again" would be familiar.
