CDC chief drops worst-case Ebola estimate

The government’s worst-case scenario forecast for the Ebola epidemic in West Africa won’t happen, a U.S. health official said Wednesday.

In September, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated the number of people sickened by the Ebola virus could explode to as many as 1.4 million by mid-January without more help.

Things have changed. On Wednesday, CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said, “We don’t think the projections from over the summer will come to pass.”

Frieden did not provide new estimates. …

I saw an article over the weekend that the numbers were still going up and they hadn’t even started peaking.

but I believe the CDC.

Typical of so many scientific type people these days - makes subjective statement vs. objective statements and folks are supposed to listen to him as if he had some sort of credence.

On the flip side, he probably lowered the numbers because the original predictions and timelines were showing a lower set of expectations - he looked at some evidence and concluded that the original data was wrong ::: If only the global-warming-climate yo-yos (no offence to Yo-Yo Ma if he happens to lurk around FR - I enjoy listening to him) would do the same...

“a Pentagon spokesman said the U.S. military is scaling back the size and number of Ebola treatment facilities it is building in Liberia from 17 to 10 centers.”

(from the article):"CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said, “We don’t think the projections from over the summer will come to pass.”

Better to have shortened the sentance , Doc. ! ..to:
CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said, “We don’t think ..."
in which case he would revert to his true "community organizer " undergraduate college degree,
and be bookends to his mentor , Barack Obama.

That’s true, they don’t think. The WHO has a better grasp of it.

The numbers may be dropping in Liberia but they’re picking up in Mali.

Well then I guess that explains why Fort Hood just priority ordered a bench top biosafety containment workstation for Ebola testing.

Based only on the reported numbers, it seems that he's right. We may not hit it by the time they projected. But using the published numbers, we'll hit 1.4 million by the end of July, 2015. But if the reported numbers are only 1/3 of the actual numbers, then the current projections put us at 1.4 million by the end of May.

bgill:" That’s true, they don’t think.

Agreed ! But the BEST grasp is MSF (Doctors Without Borders)who are and have been the frontline troops fighting Ebola.
MSF is NOT locked into medical procedures that are decades old, and yet , they are flexible to see when things are not working, they will change the medical protocal.
CDC HAD a good reputation, but they have been made a political arm of the White Hut.
WHO was slow to recognize the problem , and have been trying to play 'catch-up' since March /14 .
MSF (Medicines Sans Frontiers) has been 'in the trenches' since the beginning, and has firsthand expierience on what works , and doesn't work.
MSF is apolitical and unbiased... and trustworthy !

The CDC September estimates were simple arithmetical progressions, and were based on 2 assumptions, neither of which turn out to be true:

1) That all persons living in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia are susceptible. Within the last two weeks, it has been demonstrated that significant numbers of individuals there have high-level Ebola antibodies (presumably from prior, asymptomatic infections)/

2) That no changes in behavior will occur. Funeral practices and bushmeat consumption are already changing.

In Monrovia, Conakry, and Freetown, new diagnoses are already falling compared to two weeks ago.

This does not mean we're out of the woods, but it does mean the simple September projections are unlikely to be fulfilled.

As I understand it Seirra Leon [sic] is the current hotspot [where the UK military is desperately struggling], but Liberia is getting managed.

God bless our military! The first ones there were dropped off without any kind of support whatsoever — apparently just cash.

So there must have been outstanding on-the-spot decision-making. [No thanks to Obama.]

[Just something I bumped into. So I’m not ‘up to speed’ but...]

Just like many of us predicted, the news is getting scary again now that the election is over:

“...as many as 1.4 million by mid-January without more help. Things have changed...”

Something changed alright — the election is over.

Which is our decoy? Immigration or ebola? And which is his real goal? Is he trying to blitz us with as much terror as possible? Or what?

Our troops are reportedly improving Liberia considerably through on-the-spot decisions even though they started off with practically nothing. But Seirra Leon [sic] is out-of-control. [UK military there.]

— I’ll check the ebola ‘key word’. BRB.

That’s odd. The ‘ebola’ keyword is empty. Glitch I guess.
