Volkswagen Golf named Car of the Year
CNN Money ^ | November 13, 2014 | Peter Valdes-Dapena

You may not think of it as the most exciting car in the world, but the newly redesigned Volkswagen Golf compact car has been named Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year. The award is for all four available versions of the Golf. That includes the sporty Golf GTI, the diesel-powered Golf TDI, the electric-powered e-Golf and the basic Golf 1.8T. This seventh-generation version of the compact car is lighter and more fuel-efficient but still larger than previous Volkswagen (VLKAF) Golfs.

I like VW designs but the utilitarian side of me wins out since from my research VWs score low marks on reliability so I end up buying boring Civics.

Yes I’m surprised VW has held up as well as it has in sales. They are pretty famous for high dollar repairs in the out years.

A TDI but only 34mpg highway. Doesn’t seem like much.

"They are pretty famous for high dollar repairs in the out years."

Not so bad with better on-line parts availability (and much better pricing), all of those TDI how-to videos, and a strong inclination to DIY. YMMV, but mine are still getting better FE than just about anything available during the last ten years since purchase(s). And are still FTD.

There are still few vehicles that even come close to meeting a combination 6 or 7 simple features (Box on wheels body, TurboDiesel, manual transmission, 4x4 (FWD with studded tires is the compromise), 4 or more doors, red paint, some towing capability).

And paying $0.75 more per gallon of diesel over regular gas doesn’t help, either.

Although they have picked turkeys in the past MTCOY is the magazine award that moves the sales needle the most save for Consumer Reports.

If you can fix stuff yourself, the whole value equation changes dramatically, doesn’t it?.\

I certainly wouldn’t have a Caddy in my fleet if I had to pay their level of prices for repairs and maintenance.

The Denver area is about $0.45 over gas, but your point is well taken.

Toss in the Urea that has to be added. About 8-10 gallons per 10,000 miles at about a $100 cost.

Diesel has to give about 15% more mileage to overcome the expense.

Of course, diesel engines cost more, too, so they really haven’t taken off due to economic reasons.

The show I was watching had it at 35mpg. 42mpg is the VW numbers I just looked up. 42mpg isn’t bad.
