LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) A private club for thrillseekers in Los Angeles will remain men-only after members took the issue to a vote.
On Thursday night, for the first time in its 93-year history, the Adventurers Club of L.A. faced the monumental decision of whether to allow women to become members of this males-only institution.
A two-thirds vote by the members was required in order to allow women in and change the bylaws.
However, members voted with a resounding no, according to KCAL9s Kaj Goldberg.
It was massive resistance. I mean, people stood up. I gave my pitch as to why it should go through and people stood up and argued against me quite vehemently, Marc Weitz, a former president of the group, told Goldberg.
Weitz was one of the members that led the charge to attempt to include women as members.
Were not changing the qualifications. They still have to meet the same standards that men have, Weitz said of the proposed change.
CBS2 tried to reach out to members who were opposed to allowing women in; however, our calls were not returned.
Weitz and the handful of members who voted yes had already identified Andrea Donnellan of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as an exceptional female candidate.
Shes spent time researching in Antarctica. She was almost made the astronaut program for NASA. An amazing, amazing person, Weitz said.
For now, though, the club will remain men-only, but Weitz feels that change is inevitable.
And it opens up more doors for opportunities, he said.
Weitz and some of the other members who support the inclusion of women say that they are going to hold off on another vote for now.
Interesting. But aren’t there female only organizations, Hispanic only, black only, etc.? Such groups are promoting their groups. Why can’t men do the same without charges of bigotry?
I am a woman, and I say “Good for them!”
They should be free, as a private club, to make that decision for themselves.
Hey, I’m a guy and they’d never let me in.
I believe the Curves gym franchise is women only. No one makes a fuss over that.
Let one of us guys here try to join NOW or MADD without donating any money and see how that works out. There is an order to some things that just doesn’t need to be challenged. Liberals, being outcasts, for much of their lives like to make it a sport to forcefully encroach or be accepted into orders that don’t want them. They are only acting out right now being emboldened by their Hope and Changey leader. We’ll see how that works out after The One is gone. Wedgie time...
I don’t see what the problem is, let the groups make their own choices, and if it’s not for you, you don’t have to join them.
“I am a woman, and I say Good for them!
They should be free, as a private club, to make that decision for themselves.”
I agree completely.
That is what “Free Association” is all about.
I think it is a bad decision, but I am glad there can still be men-only clubs!
But do they have gender neutral bathrooms?
Pray America is waking
Let the women form their OWN club...aren't they CAPABLE of doing that?!
Well, I guess it’s time to sic the government on them, then.
I agree, too. It’s called freedom of association, which means that you are free to choose whom you will associate with, as well as whom you will not. Still makes me scratch my head in disbelief when I come across people that don’t understand this simple fact.
It’s a topsy-turvy world, my FRiend.
And it was predicted in the Book of Isaiah (chapter 5).
That is so easy to take care of, that I’m wondering why no body has thought about it. Ladies, start your own “ADVENTURER CLUB”. Case is closed.
The article states, “For now, though, the club will remain men-only, but Weitz feels that change is inevitable.”
Why does it EVER have to become a coed group? I stand with the men that say NO!
No doubt there is most likely a group available for coed groups of the same nature. This is a group for men only and they like it that way so if anyone has issue with this, join the coed group or start your own if there is none. Of course, maybe none or hardly any from the Mens Only Group would transfer to join the coed group if it became available (probably that is why they joined a men’s group!)
At my church we meet altogether on weekend services but then the option is open to join a small group throughout the week. There are many options available to choose: Coed, Women only, Men only, Singles, Marrieds only, and there are groups open to all. People choose according to their needs. Sometimes these Christian men like to get together without women (and they could better explain to any naysayers why this is important to them). At these groups I have heard that the men help each other, through prayer and council, how to better love their wives, children, other family members etc. as well as help with any other “Men” issue that they have (i.e. work related, home repair help anything) through mentorship of these other men who they look to as “brothers in the Lord.”
