I-594 makes it a crime to transfer a gun to another person without doing a background check except for some particular exceptions. Using just one example will demonstrate a particular egregious chilling effect upon our right to keep and bear arms. Suppose your spouse wishes to use your gun for a week or two while their gun is being repaired. You would think there shouldnt be a problem with an innocent act like this. You would expect there would be an exception in the law for this. The closest thing to an exception for this case is:
This section does not apply to: (a) A transfer between immediate family members, which for this subsection shall be limited to spouses, domestic partners, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, first cousins, aunts, and uncles, that is a bona fide gift;

domestic partners?
Yeah right all those Gentle Giants out there.
*One who breaks an unjust law that conscience tells him is unjust is in reality expressing the highest regard for the law. We will not obey your evil laws.*
MLK, JR.
Same sex domestic partners? Common law “wife”? Adopted kids? No doubt some overzealous county prosecuters will be setting up sting ops and doing surveillance seeking out violators to make a name for themselves and further their careers.
Don’t comply. If your guns are registered (you’re an idiot, but that another matter) and the gestapo comes looking for them, you lost them when Mt. St. Helens blew. If you’re the buyer, give some phony name — Barry Soetero for example — and let them run the check. Transfer the guns in another state.
When this knee-jerk feel-good claptrap fails to make any dent in the violent crime rate and the state has to spend millions defending it against 2nd Amendment lawsuits, it will either be repealed or overturned.
Until then, fight back any way you can. F the fascists!
Go to any range anywhere in WA, and wait for the dad’s to show up with their kids. Make your arrests there, as soon as the kid fires down range with the .22.
That’s how bad this law is.
The temporary solution (until rule of law is restored and FedGov/states stop attempting to violate our God-given rights) is to buy plenty of extra guns. You can’t have just one 9mm pistol - what if it needs maintenance? Get two for each person in the family. You can’t have just one AR-15, get a box of 80% lowers, have each family member finish two, and then the thugs don’t even know they exist. Shotguns? Take Joe Biden’s advice and get two for each person, in each gauge. That way you never have to temporarily transfer a gun to a family member.
The law is useless because there is no gun registry. LEOs have no idea who owns what gun or when they got it. Even going forward the background check is not tied to a specific gun.
There is no way to enforce this law, so next election they will be back with a desperately needed "fix", yep gun registration.
The first thing President Cruz should do is to create a Civil Rights Division within the BATF the same as they have in the FBI. Only instead of enforcing anti discrimination laws the BATF Civil Rights Division would enforce anti 2nd amendment violations at the state, local and even business level.
Good for the goose is good for the gander. We need to learn to play the game the way they do.
They don’t even have to send one down range. Supposedly just them handling it is enough. I’ll be corrected gladly if I’m wrong.
That is an excellent idea, and I hope he will do exactly that in his first few days in office.
Are you talking about the same background (& registration) checks that I know about? That use form 4473 for transfers? Name, address, SSN, drivers license, plus make, model and serial number(s) of what is being transferred. They are very much tied to a specific gun.
