Jim Murray's Whisky Bible calls a Japanese malt the best in the world [snip]

TALK ABOUT a whisky rebellion!

A Japanese single malt has been named the best whisky in the world by an industry watchdog — and for the first time, there are no Scottish distilleries in the top five.

Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 was awarded the top honor by Jim Murray, whose 2015 edition of the Whisky Bible comes out next week. Glenmorangie Ealanta. Glenmorangie Enlarge Old Pulteney 21 Single Malt Scotch Whiskey. Inver House Distillers Enlarge The Robert Burns Single Malt. Arran Distillers Enlarge

Other whiskeys are nothing compared to the Yamazaki, Murray writes.

The Yamazaki is so good that it should be a “wakeup call” for Scottish booze makers, Murray told The Daily Mail, which got an advance copy.

Tried to find some yesterday... no luck. It’s not (for good scotch) especially pricey, about $70.

Could be a good investment then (if one could stay out of it).

They don’t improve with age once they’re bottled. Plus, if I don’t drink it, my brother in law will probably mix it with Dr. Pepper and swill it down while watching Jerry Springer.

True dat. But they may improve in price as in they may financially be an investment as in stamps, coins, silver or artwork.

How about if I drink it while I admire my gun collection, most of which is going up in value?

Then buy two bottles. One to drink and one to appreciate.

I can get by with Powers Irish and Bulleit Rye quite nicely.

The Japanese make some pretty good beers as well. Wait until the Scotts make the best sake.

I’ve had it many times, but I am not that fond of it. I guess my scotch tastes are a bit plebeian because I am more attracted to the serviceable blended mid-range brands, Ballentines, Famous Grouse, Dewars...

Single malts are expensive, pretentious, and peaty. OK, Yamazaki is not peaty, but it still has a sharp bite that I just don’t find attractive.

I know very little of Scotch, but that b-i-l remark made me cringe!

Your brother in law sounds like a cheap date, but a fun guy. Keep a bottle of Cutty around for those mixing with noxious contaminants.

The regular Bulliet bourbon is my favorite everyday whiskey. Along with Buffalo Trace. Woodford Reserve for a special occasion. I have tried much more expensive whiskey, much of it good, but not enough better than those to get my money..IMHO

Everything I know about scotch I learned by reading a J&B label.

good scotch

As far as my taste buds are concerned, that is an oxymoron. LOL.

Of course I live at ground zero of the world's bourbon capitol. I can go out in the morning and smell the mash.

True, the Yamazaki 12-yr really flies off the shelves, much more so than the other Japanese whiskies. You can usually find the 18-year version more readily (because it's locked in the glass case with the other $$$ stuff).

I like it, but would not go out of my way to find it. IMO, the Great King's Street blend by Compass Box is a better buy, with very similar flavor profile. Compass Box's Spice Tree is very nice as well (IIRC, that's a pure malt blend, or whatever they call that now).

I like the peaty, and sweet, and bity, and smooth. Only a couple that I find intolerable.

I look forward to the day I can taste it.

For a while, a few years ago, the Japanese were buying up *all* the Lagavulin....and it was hard to come by in the USA.

My favorite has been ‘vulin [for a long time] ...it takes some getting used to, but by the third swallow it’s like butterscotch.

I doubt if I will pay $95. just to taste it. I’ll see what the price is, in New Hampshire.
