British pop star Phil Collins on Tuesday handed over his vast collection of artifacts related to the Battle of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution to the state of Texas.
Collins was in San Antonio to donate what's considered the world's largest private collection of Alamo artifacts. It includes a fringed leather pouch and a gun used by Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie's legendary knife and letters from garrison commander William B. Travis.
"There's things in there that will make your mouth drop," Collins said.
The 1980s pop artist and Genesis singer-drummer has joked that he spent all the money he made from music on artifacts related to the 1836 battle in which 1,500 Mexican troops laid siege to 200 Texans.
The collection was given to Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, the state steward of the Alamo who is pushing for a new historical center that would house Collins' collection.

So when do we find out what was in the collection?
I suspect that the Bowie knife validity will be in doubt, but who knows. Uber cool if it is the real thing, but how did it survive for some collector to get it?
A new museum wont open until years from now according to the article
This is a duplicate thread. Look for smoking frogs thread from earlier.
Good man! Thanks to Phil Collins!
How much money can you really make selling hamburgers in a Canadian trailer park?
They have pics on Yahoo, and there is one of Collins holding what looks like the Musso Bowie, with the S shaped guard and the brass back strap. But, as you said, who knows? Collins says it belonged to Jesse Robinson, in Bowie’s command.
That is so cute. I guess he’s like Alan Rickman. A british cowboy wannabe. Brits don’t have any bigger than life heroes like America used to have.
Thank you, Phil Collins.
I think a lot of these items came from the de la Pena family. He was there and his diary said Crockett surrendered. That diary has pretty much been discredited.
The article said Collins turned the artifacts over to the Land Commissioner. The Alamo is owned and operated by the Daughters of the Texas Revolution. At least is was the last time I was there. And I’ve been there at least 10 times and would love to go another ten times. It simply fascinates me. Of course, it could be that my wife is a descendent of the heroes who died there.
Texas, the greatest state in world history.
Hmmm, the Brits would disagree: Richard the Lionheart, Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, Gordon of Khartoum, Lawrence of Arabia, Sir Bernard Law Montgomery, Winston Churchill. British museums, churches, parks & roundabouts are filled with statues of their heroes.

I’ve never cared for his music, but Collins has always seemed like a very cool guy you’d enjoy hanging out with.
Many thanks Phil!
I was sworn in as an honorary Texan by Hayden Fry.
