It could also be that the joke, being of a poor, charmless and therefore unfunny variety, fails to amuse. When that happens, the joke teller might have the good grace to admit that he has, on this occasion, failed to be the wit he fancies himself, rather than continuing to declare that what he said was high brow hilarious and that he is surrounded by humorless schlubs, n'est-ce pas?
