They admired him. They grew to love him prior to his relief by Eisenhower the Politician. They would have followed him into battle.
I doubt seriously it was the Germans.
Patton was headed home and out of the Army. He did plan to write a book but then again every General and Admiral in the war of note did so to.
It was an accident, nothing more or less.
Of course there have been multiple conspiracy theories on this and the movie “Brass Target” had a pretty good plot line on this also with a unique way of staging that accident.

As commander of 15th Army and (in December 1945) the ranking general in Europe, General Patton had one assigned to him. The cars varied little from the production models. They were painted Olive Drab and had US Army markings. This car had "flipper arm" turn signals and parking lights added to it. After this accident the entire front body was replaced with parts from a 1939 model Cadillac made by Cadillac-France. Parts of the grill were locally made. This gives the sedan the unique appearance it has today.
After it was repaired the sedan was returned to service as a US Constabulary staff car. It was later used by GEN. I. D. White.

He was interviewed last night on Meghan Kelly and said “no doubt” Patton was murdered. So now this draft-dodging blowhard, who never served a day in uniform, is an authority on the death of Patton and all things military and comes to this conclusion, which has been shot down by all reputable scholars on the life of Patton. Geneal O’Reilly also wants to send a force of “mercenaries” to take care of the ISIS problem. So he’s also been watching too many Stallone movies. Hey, Billy, it’s make-believe.

You’re even better than you thought. Patton actually died because he threw a blood clot that came from his being bed-ridden for so long. So you arranged not only the accident, but a delayed thrombosis. THAT’S talent!

Actually, Patton’s car hit the truck in the rear. And Patton was riding in the front seat at the time. He suffered a slight cut on his head, but no other visible injury.
