Ahoy, mateys! Aye...it be that day once more. The day when ye can hoist the Jolly Roger and set sail for adventure (or mystify your co-workers & friends by how you are speaking).
September 19th is Talk Like A Pirate Day.
Given the seriousness of all the crap going on around us, it's nice...even for a little bit...to be silly and have a little fun.
After the way the Bucs played last night, I don’t think anyone would want to be a pirate; the Rays would have played a better game.
P.S. My daughter asked me if she could dress like a pirate, so I bought her a KAL uniform. (Cue the Seoul, Inchon, and Kim Hunter puns...)
Many years ago, somebody on FR lamented that his ‘talk like a pirate day’ effort with his wife was met cooly when he said, ‘Come About and Prepare to be Boarded!’.
One of the better FR posts.
You mean talk like Robert Newton day? The brilliant actor who single-handedly invented pirate-speak for his role as Long John Silver in the 1950 movie TREASURE ISLAND?
I’m all for it!
True...
Which gave me a thought: I wonder if, 200-300 years from now, people will talk about, dress up like, name sports teams after, and make "swashbuckler" movies [or the 23rd-century movie equivalent] about today's gang cartels, the way we talk about, dress up like, name sports teams after, and make "swashbuckler" movies about the pirates of 200-300 years ago.

They were young, angry, armed men who raped, pillaged, looted and burned.
Reminds me of Rodney King's merry band of marauders.
Here is a song just for today....

No matter what we do we just can’t seem to make up any ground on those damned Cardinals! AAAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!
My gawd, I didn't think ANYONE remember Robert Newton!
I LOVED that movie!
Ar-ar-MATEYS.
Ole pegleg: Be you Ben Gunn?
In other words, speak like an illiterate Irish!
Microsoft Security Essentials works for me. I have never had a problem with it and it seems to integrate fine.
I have previous used some of the free ones — AVG, AVAST! — and some pay ones — McAfee, Norton, Trend Micro.
They all became bloatware and/or created conflicts with other programs/functions.
Yes, I can never quite get the fascination.
My son likes “Jake and the Neverland Pirates” - they are ALL supposed to be pirates, but “good” and “bad”.
I guess it’s OK - I thought pirates were pretty neat (not a huge fan), but in the end I knew the truth.
Actually, try looking up “myth of pirate”. No, you won’t see how horrible it is we make them cute and exciting for the kiddies. See how many blogs you get about how pirates were/are really just free spirits who were rebelling against unfair government, etc, by striking out on their own, etc. And the Somalian pirates are fighting “the Man” of Europe and America, somehow. I.e., evil white people are just getting theirs from these black Africans justifiably.
Either you have a Very dry sense of humor or you need to recheck the subject of the thread!
Somehow I doubt the Irish brogue was adopted for stereotype pirates as late as 1950?
Saw Director Kevin Smith on a talk show. He said that whenever Johnny Depp is back in Hollywood with his family, their kids play together. Depp would do the Captain Jack voices and the kids loved it. So when they come over to his house ( Smith’s ) he does his character for them, Silent Bob. He said the kids aren’t impressed.
