As the Scottish vote for independence hangs over London like a fog, I sit back and wonder why (if yes wins)?
Up to young adulthood, when I thought of England I thought of the Queen, Knights of the round table, 007, William Shakespeare ... all the historical fact or fictional persona.
Now, after some 50 years I think of unfettered Muslim immigration who have no plan to acclimate to their new country, but have come to change it, change it by bankrupting it through social welfare and high birthrates and are being enabled by European Progressives.
I wonder if Scotland breaks -- I wonder how much in part did the Muslim problems in Britain have to do with it?
I read in the Daily Mail the efforts of the SNP to increase immigration to Scotland that in many respects goes again public opinion. They figure that the aging population (coupled with the exodus of young Scots not mentioned but a real concern) will be required to maintain the existing and increasing welfare state. They are looking at having an open borders policy when it comes to immigration however the English are not buying it. From what i read and discern is that the SNP is for all intents and purpose a socialist party masquerading as a nationalist one. Why get out of the UK only to join Europe? My guess is that if the Scots want out, I suggest you let them go and hold them to the fire once out. Scotland needs the UK a hell of alot more than the UK needs Scotland. Good riddance. Sorry if offended but we went through this BS in Canada twenty years ago and the separatists blinked!
If anything Scotland is considered more “progressive” than England, although perhaps not on the issue of immigration. Scots probably don’t share the English “guilt” over colonialism.
Not what the fight is about. It’s partly a referendum on Progressivism, but the other way. Scottish Nationalists feel like England doesn’t spend a high enough proportion of their GDP on Scotish social welfare and education. An Independent Scotland could spend more of it’s GDP on social welfare (though possibly less money over a depending on North Sea Oil, their currency and the ability to borrow). Part of th Compromise is allowing Scotland to raise and control additional Local Taxes.
Immigration is a problem because Scotland needs more immigrant to make up for some projected population decline in the next few decades. UK is tightening up on immigration due to overcrowding in England (not sure about the situation Wales).
Many people have the wrong opinion about modern Scotland. The people are great. But they aren’t Conservative military minded cowboys. Royal Scottish Regiment has to be heavily augmented with English troops to keep their numbers. The pro -Independence groups resent British Nukes being based in Scotland.
Only bad things are taxes, the cold and the damp. Great place, civil, better educated than us, solid health care, beautiful country, great people. Some (some) high tech industry growth even in the Highlands where it’s empty. They really call little things “wee”. I love them. But they are not going Conservative.
Islamic question doesn’t come into it. Scots are huge ‘anti-racists’, and routinely berate Nigel Farage whenever he ventures north. This is purely about the Scots wanting more welfare goodies and government child abuse.
The entirety of all our (USA) governmental “allies” in Europe (NATO) including the UK, have basked under the comfort of a USA defense umbrella for far too long.
Meanwhile, they all conspired and created the faux EU entity to attack the USA economically.
Very few of the citizens of the “EU” have voted themselves in/out of the EU.
Small nations can make socialism work for a while.
If they remain small, control the foreign immigrant population numbers, and defend themselves, it can work for them for a time.
But they must also be able to do all of the above, absent a foreign defense umbrella.
The governments of the UK and the larger EU are unable to sustain their socialist utopia dreams, absent the USA.
And the USA will eventually fold the umbrella.
Perhaps as soon as 2016.
Scotland is deciding tomorrow if they think they are capable of going it alone, or continuing with the failing UK/EU concept.
Best of luck to all of them, however it turns out for them. I am heartily sick of the political and financial games all of the above play, and as Scotland is a pretty country, perhaps they should host the UN!
Yes....I have a friend who is Dcottish...she and her husband came purposefully to US in 1970s...they saw what was coming...she says the Yes vote means MORE socialism.
Bullsh!t on Scotts being overly “socialists”...they want to GET AWAY from the Brits to avoid more “melting pot” of their peoples.
I say GO SCOTLAND !!!! Give em hell...and then give em some more.
Go Scotland? You dont know what you're talking about.
