One of the delights of living in Istanbul was to go to a street vendor in the morning and buy some "simits." These look like bagels, and are covered with sesame seeds. Delicious. They were baked overnight in regular bakeries, then distributed in plastic bags to the street vendors. They'd display them on little portable tables. Now when I'm in Detroit I buy some at the Middle East markets.
Any to recommend? I’m just outside Detroit.
LOL...if I go the Mozzi nearest me.....I need a armed guard. Long gone is the nice Italian neighborhood [little Italy] where the Mozzi’s flagship store stands...changing times [sigh].
They do make a nice ice cream cake for b’days though.
I remember the trays stacked high to the sky and fresh roasted nuts served in newspaper cones. :D
As a kid, I was mesmerized by how fast he would add up the columns of numbers he scribbled on a brown paper bag, with a pencil he kept behind his ear, to get his total.....heaven forbid he was *off* by a penny....b/c mom would have caught it! Thanks.
At the onset of chain groceries like A&P and Finest, I guess were his demise....kinda like the milkman and breadman. Good memories.
The only problem with European markets are that they are in Europe.
Well, I had to go to sleep. I am 6 hours ahead of you guys in the states. Second, it isn't so much I am pro-Europe. I am actually anti big government. And that is everywhere. The result of letting the females in our democracies vote, over 100 years ago. The ancient Roman's didnt let the females into their politics and they lasted for over 500 years. Cause and effect?
I don't know my way around Detroit that well. My son-in-law Richard, who's Lebanese, and who lives in Auburn Hills, usually takes me to the Middle Eastern shops.
