Police say flying a drone on a public street is legal, and due to privacy laws they can't watch what was recorded.

Bull. It lands in my backyard, with no one claiming it, I'm watching the video.

"It didn't look like a hobby toy to me," said Urista.

The Drone, valued at around $500, was equipped with an onboard camera.

Really? It looks like a hobby toy to me. Some 20 years ago, I had friends who spent more than $500 on their RC planes.

I agree....Somehow, I don’t think there’s much of a mystery to this....and I sure as hell wouldn’t have called the cops.

I keep a fishnet handy in my backyard for just such occasions. It would be on-sale on eBay within the next 24 hours.

The last thing I would do is call the cops. And I don't even have a dog.

Nor would I. I would be looking a replacement controllers on the web. And I’d host a movie night to watch the video.

My thought too. Either that or since we were already “sitting around the fire” it would be kindling.

Probably an identification tag at the local PD.

I think the article was saying that it’s illegal for police to watch it.

The cops didn't say you can't watch the video ... they said that they can't watch it. They may be right ... the 4th amendment isn't completely dead yet.

I think the operative words are POLICE and THEY, both referring to the police.

I don't believe there are any laws prohibiting a private person from viewing pictures or videos from an unclaimed or unidentified...
flying object
that appears in their back yard.

They found the owner...and it has been returned.

Maybe. However, I'd say this was trespassing/littering. They'd certainly be able to call this a minor crime and view the video therein to possibly determine ownership.

I’d think watching the video might give clues to who the owner was, or at least from where it was launched, assuming the camera was recording.

Update:

Allen Park Police say the owner of the Drone came forward Friday morning, after seeing this report.

The device has been returned to him.

Officers say the owner is from Lincoln Park, and got the Drone as a gift. He put it in the air from a local school, and lost it in the trees. His daughter was taking a live feed of what the on-board camera was displaying, but its not believed anything was recorded, nor was he trying to intentionally invade anyone’s privacy.

True, but technically they could call it trespassing or littering, then they could view the video.
