FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC — Two men who were paragliding near the V.C. Summer Nuclear Plant were issued trespassing citations after they landed in a restricted area near the plant, according to an incident report filed with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office.
The report said an officer was dispatched to the area near Lake Monticello on Aug. 24 in reference to trespassers on the property near the plant located at 574 Stairway Road in Jenkinsville.
When the officer arrived, he observed two men with a parachute and a helmet with a GoPro video camera attached to it.
The officer asked the men if they knew where they were and they said they were informed by the plant’s security officers that they had landed in the restricted area. The men said they were doing a form of paragliding in which the boat pulls them to predetermined height of up to 2,500 to 3,000 feet and then are released to glide around, the report said.
One of the men said they were there for nearly an hour and had taken off from the boat three or four times during the time period, using the GoPro to record their flights, the report said.
According to the report, the officer told the men to put the parachute in his patrol vehicle and confiscated the GoPro camera because it was used to record the power plant. The officer said they would get the camera back after they appeared in court for their trespassing citations.
The report also said the officers contacted the Department of Natural Resources to meet with the driver of the boat to speak to him about driving so close to the plant.

Lake Monticello Reservoir
Offers picnic shelters, fishing, boat ramp and other water recreational activities. The Fairfield Recreation Commission operates a park at the lake. For information on the park area, contact the commission at (803) 635-9114. The smaller Monticello Recreation Lake is located north of the large body of water and is about 300 acres in size. This park area offers fishing two days a week (Wednesdays and Saturdays), swimming (no lifeguard on duty) and picnic facilities. Park gates open from sunrise to sunset. The V.C. Summer Nuclear Station Nature Trail is located at the boundary of the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station exclusion area on the lake. Benches, wood duck boxes, blue bird boxes and plant identification markers dot this 1.5 mile trail.

IIRC, it has a small 'chute on the end so the whole thing doesn't whack someone on the ground.
Should be some pretty good thermals above the cooling towers...

I was just wondering if it is possible to obtain that high of an altitude with a much shorter rope, by obtaining a certain speed that provides sufficient lift. I have a hard time believing they are using a rope that is over a half-mile long on a small boat. Maybe they do. I just don’t have any experience with this.
