Groom Robs Bride's Dad to Pay Dowry

A Mauritanian groom stole from his father-in-law to pay the dowry for his bride, but the theft was discovered by the bride’s father two days after marriage.

Newspapers in the north African Arab country said the groom stole nearly 500,000 ougyiya ($1,725) from his father-in-law’s company, where he works, and paid the money to him as dowry (money paid by the groom to the bride under Islamic law).

“The bride’s father discovered the theft two days after marriage and knew that his son-in -law was behind it.

“He wanted to go and expose him in front of his wife but was persuaded by his family not to do so,” the Mauritanian Al Takadumi news network said, adding that the man insisted that his son-in-law return all the money he had stolen.

It's no surprise that a currency called ougyiya is practically worthless.

A dowry is money given TO a bride, not FOR a bride. This is more like the sale price for a woman, paid to her father, ie, slavery. Not surprised Islam is involved.

and the dowry idea existed in a lot of non-Muslim countries too.

Koreans called it the “Bride Price”... but they think a big container of TIDE laundry soap is a good house warming gift too... lol

If the ill-gotten gains were part of the dowry, wouldn't they already be considered "returned"? ;-P

I think Vikings had a bride-price for the woman, too.

I think laundry soap is an excellent gift.

and from watching Korean shows online a watermelon (those round ones) or other fruit are common gifts for when you visit someone.

Fruit is a bit expensive there.
