USC cornerback Josh Shaw admitted to USC officials Wednesday that his story about injuring his ankles after jumping off a second-story balcony to save his drowning nephew was a lie.
Shaw, a senior and projected starter who was named a team captain over the weekend, has been suspended indefinitely.
Shaw released a statement through his lawyer, Donald Etra, on Wednesday:
"On Saturday August 23, I injured myself in a fall. I made up a story about this fall that was untrue. I was wrong to not tell the truth. I apologize to USC for this action on my part.
My USC coaches, the USC Athletic Department, and especially Coach Sarkisian have all been supportive of me during my college career, and for that, I am very grateful."
Shaw's story was described on USC's website Monday. Shaw was said to have jumped off the balcony of his cousins apartment complex in his hometown of Palmdale, Calif., and landed on concrete, injuring his ankles, before crawling into a pool to save his nephew.
"We are extremely disappointed in Josh," said USC head football coach Steve Sarkisian. "He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story.
"I appreciate that Josh has now admitted that he lied and has apologized. Although this type of behavior is out of character for Josh, it is unacceptable. Honesty and integrity must be at the center of our program. I believe Josh will learn from this. I hope that he will not be defined by this incident, and that the Trojan Family will accept his apology and support him."

It’s not the lie that gets you , it’s the cover story.
Slow learning curve.

Just think, if only he had been shot by a cop, he would still be a hero.
He is just a good boy. A “gentle giant” tryin’ to get his life together. /sarc,gag
“...the Trojan Family will accept his apology, and support him”...
Awwww, how cute!
Didn’t his sister make a statement backing his story?
One wonders if a felony might be involved!!!
But still it was “racist” of us to question his original story.
Interesting. Breitbart ran the original story and then a day later ran the “story might be fake” story. I allowed as how the original story didn’t ring true and got slammed by the leftie trolls flashing the race card, “He’s an authentic hero dammit!!!!!”
Sometimes gloating is good for the spirit ;’)
Another article I read raised the possibility of domestic abuse.
USC football player Josh Shaw was named in a burglary report ... Cops going to re-interview everyone involved in light of new information.
Story developing

Just like the Mike Brown’s accomplice. Must be a cultural thing.
I am sorely disappointed. I had thought how great it was that he saved a boy’s life. Now who knows. Probably was injured doing something he should not have been doing.
Actually, there was a police report regarding a suspect matching his description, jumping from a building during a robbery.
I bet he soiled himself when his ‘heroic’ story went viral. A little lie can be pulled off. A lie celebrated by millions won’t last.
Sad. I wanted this one to be true. Dang.
Yes, don’t they ever learn?
It doesn’t even make that much sense to try to dive off a second floor balcony. He could have hurt himself even worse and been completely unable to save the boy... should it have been true. Dashing down the stairs would take what, 30 seconds? It never did ring true.
He’ll be “suspended” until his injury heals.
If he was injured in just a fall he never would have covered it up. There is more to this which will hopefully come out. He may have been pulling a stupid stunt or something worse but whichever the case I dont believe he just fell for a second.
