The End of Tanning?
The Atlantic ^ | August 25, 2014 | Olga Khazan

Ryan Baker, a director of operations for Palm Beach Tan, ushers me through the narrow, pastel hallways of one of the chain's salons in Washington, D.C. It's a tiny place, squeezed into a strip mall between a Chipotle and a beauty parlor. But in a pinch, some see it as a mini-vacation—a dose of artificial sunshine when life’s too busy, or the outside world too cloudy, for the real thing.

.......................................................

And that's the next big challenge for health agencies. Despite how rapidly the warnings and taxes and regulations have beat back the sunbed industry, there’s still something a little glamorous about being tan.

I never understood why tanning was somehow attractive. As the article mentions tanning is a relatively recent phenomena. Before the 1920s for Westerners the beauty norm was alabaster skin since tanned skin was associated with being a working woman in the fields. Then tanning became a sign as incomes and travel opportunities rose that one had the income and leisure time to travel to sunny warm places.

Just as an extension Victorian women to enhance the milkiness of their skin would use an arsenic based solution as a type of lotion/wash.

They also consumed chalk based drinks that have been found to be high in lead.

“I never understood why tanning was somehow attractive.’

...because people are stupid? That works for me.

If you are REALLY desperate for a tan, get one out of a bottle. I personally know quite a few people who have had tanning catch up with them, and they look 10 years older than they actually are. They also have to be on constant lookout for those “suspicious moles”. It’s the one that you don’t find that gets you.

There are quite a few myths that women hold regarding what is attractive.

Tattoos
Fake Breasts
Pixie Haircuts
Pancake Makeup
High Heels

There are different types of tanning - the farmer tan (hands only), trucker tan (left arm).
Back in the 60's you could buy a bottle of QT (Quick Tan) and get tanned overnight without the sun. I guess they can spray one on nowadays.

I’m a woman and think high heels are fantastic.

I always giggle at the tanning businesses in Tucson. Just wear a bathing suit when you go check the mail, you’ll tan up by the end of the week.

Women used to get great tans hanging the laundry out on clotheslines.

I agree. I’ve always been very fair, and I like it that way. A guy once told me it was so refreshing to see a woman with lovely white skin instead of fake-baked brown.

A friend of mine, a black woman, once said to me, “Can I ask you something? Why do white people try to darken their skin color even though they look better with the natural skin they were born with?” I just shrugged and replied, “Good question. I never wanted to do it myself.”

Ditto!

As for pancake makeup, well, I don't think women have worn that for decades. Foundation? Yes. Lightly and properly applied, it looks good.

Sunlight is an important way to get Vitamin D.

If you don’t drink any milk AND avoid all sun, you can get a serious Vitamin D deficiency.

Go out in the sun for a few days, you’ll feel better.

Without tanning booths, John Boehner would have nothing to do.

Blame it on John Boehner’s making tanning palours too popular.

Pixie haircuts???

But all their (girl) friends will tell them “oh it’s so cute!!!”

[while their husband is fuming about what happened to the long-haired thin beauty he married, and wonders when he married a short, fat guy]

[yes girls.... I know us guys get bald fat and dumpy too]

I agree-—I don’t even think I’ve heard the term used in years.

I don’t like tan over light. Give me red hair, blue eyes and white skin everyday. Throw in some freckles.
