Word For The Day, Monday, 8/25/14
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
incubus; noun
1. An evil spirit believed to have sexual intercourse with women as they sleep.2.A nightmare. 3.An oppressive or nightmarish burden.
Etymology: c.1200, from L.L. (Augustine), from L. incubo "nightmare, one who lies down on (the sleeper)," from incubare "to lie upon" (see incubate ). Plural is incubi. In the Middle Ages, their existence was recognized by law.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
Obams has brought this incubus to our doorstep.
No pushing at the door please!
There is much cause for concern on all sides!
Obama’s entiere administration is an incubus.
A+++ will we ever wake up from it?
I agree. People need to lighten up.
It ticks me off, having ancestors who fought in the Revolution and the War of 1812.
I guess because my ancestors were all eastern European peasants who came in the late 1800s I have zero problem with it, and think it is funny.
being constantly outraged is EXHAUSTING. our own administration’s outrages exhaust me plenty, I don’t need to go looking to others to outrage me. We set off fireworks to celebrate our booting the British, why can’t they celebrate their very minor victory.
it is!
There is a lot of good stuff being published this month in honor of the 200th anniversary of the sacking of Waschington. For a start:
Should the Brits get all huffy every year when we celebrate 4th of July?
No, we’re allies and closely-related societies. We can poke fun because we are no enemies and it is in the past.
fascinating stuff! I really do not know the local history here and it’s wild to see place names like Alexandria and Bladensburg in the historical accounts.
10 days out from the wedding and I am really pretty calm about all of that, but xsboy appears fated to go to NYC for the job offer there on the 17th of Sept and my stomach is in total knots about that. We have to find a living situation for him there. He has a few former teammates who live and work there but who aren’t in a position for him to share an apt currently. He really doesn’t want to go but nothing local has presented itself [despite my fervent prayers which has me believing that God does want him up there for whatever reason]. So signing a lease doesn’t seem like a good idea. Xshub has been checking and has found sublets and room-mate wanted things, but how are we to know that they aren’t 1) ax murderers 2) gay 3) drug dealers. And sorry to all gays who are offended at me listing that orientation along with the others, but he would not be comfortable in such a living situation, so oh well, you are lumped in to that extent. So my angst level is pretty dang high. Also the ISIS/ISIL threats have me on edge, because 1) we live in DC 2) xsboy potentially moving to NYC and 3: xsteen will be out of the country on her honeymoon on 9/11 but at least will not be traveling, though that’s slight consolation. SO, yes, I am nerved up big time around now.
As I remember, you remodeled your kitchen recently. How would you like it if some neighbor burned it down? The White House had JUST been completed and furnished in the latest styles and highest taste, as befitting the capitol of a country. It was utterly destroyed, along with the Capitol, the Treasury, and many other buildings in DC. Only the sudden Hurricane and Tornado saved DC from being a total loss. (The contents of the WH were a total loss, but the exterior walls were saved.)
It cost millions of $$$ to restore and refurbish. If it weren't for Dolly Madison, we wouldn't even have copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution today. While the men ran around in denial, she saved the important national documents and Washington's portrait. She was almost last out of the WH (her husband had left hours earlier on horseback with 2 pistols at the ready). I don't know how many Americans lost their lives in that fiasco, but I don't consider the Brits' "minor victory" a cause for frivolity.
The good news it that the attack galvanized this country and made us the power that we are today. Americans proved their mettle in 1814, and Brits snuck away like weasels.
We don’t celebrate the 4th of July in Britain. There is a difference.
Figures; actually took the girls to the beach the day before
sorry can’t get worked up about it. can’t change the past. we have jihadists threatening us TODAY (don’t think WI is on their target list), so I live with the present day threat, which leaves me little umbrage left for ancient wrongs.
always a day late and a buck short ; )
