Never used this program before, but I am trying to learn it for a project and have been watching tutorials on youtube.
My problem is that the preview screen on the left side of my screen doesn't work, either for individual images on the right side of the screen, or when I try to run the images as a movie. All I get is a black screen, although I can hear the soundtrack.
I have searched online and learned that this has not been an uncommon problem for WLMM 2011 (or 2012, apparently), as there are many discussions about it but a real lack of solutions. Still, those discussions are pretty old, and I'm hoping that maybe there is a fix available that was previously unavailable.
I'm running a Dell Vostro with Windows 7 Professional.
Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do to address this, besides GETTING A MAC (don't even go there with me), or a new computer. And yes, I'm logged in, plugged in, the computer is on, and whatever.
I'm not that technically savvy, unfortunately. But I'll appreciate any CONSTRUCTIVE insights or suggestions if anyone has any.

If you are editing HD video, do you have an i7 quad core computer? If not, that could be your problem.
2 possible solutions:
#1: Video codec. Many times, if you do not have the correct video codec, the preview or play will be black.
What is the format (extension: avi? wmv? mp4?) of the video file?
#2: Your hardware acceleration (check in Control Panel) — try it ‘off’ and try it ‘on’.

I am a great technical resource, but I’m not sure I can help you with video. Websites? Sure. Killer on designing and implementing. Applications? Getting good on those right now; have a major personal project in-the-making. Almost anything else: Server stuff, Events, tweaking applications.... but no video experience.
That said, I got a gift when it comes to computers. If you are unable to get the help you need on this thread, then we should talk.
Try re-installing it or download the free trial version of Wondershare video editor for Windows for building the raw video and editing. It is fairly intuitive and not hard to understand if you have used Live Movie Maker.
You can also get a trial version of Adobe Premiere. It is a great product. Much more robust, but may represent overkill for your project.
that program is world famous in the world of cinematography as being buggy and also an immense memory hog. you are absolutely not imagining your problem not even, in the words of Obama, a smidgen.
I do don’t know how much time you have invested already in learning all of the features of microsoft movie maker, however short of radically upgrading your memory or decreasing the number of clips my strong advice to you is that this problem is not going away.
I cannot tell you how many people have like you torn their hair out over this type of thing.
sony vegas is universally leave regsrded as providing more features and at least up to 1 year ago it was free the features of sony vegas are much richer and it is much less of a memory hog and you’ll be much much happier using it.
I used movie maker on a fast PC for about 1 month and I was constantly running into your same problem. My computer was crashing and when I switch to a different editing program those problems instantly went away.
stop using movie maker do not get addicted to it.

I am a long time pinnacle studio operator. Never tried Vegas. What little, I tried Premiere, I wasn’t wild about.
I run 17 ultimate on an I7 dell with higher end video card that was on special when I bought the pc. W8 for all the drawbacks handles editing very well.
I used windows movie maker once or twice.
I am looking to go to 4K soon.
Enough video RAM is something else to check.

True. I also use Pinnacle, mainly because it works so well with mpg4 camera files (like GoPro). I also edit video shot on tape, all HD. A lot of folks don’t realize that editing a short 20 minute video shot in HD is like processing 30,000 1920 X 1080 pixel pictures all at once.
I had a go pro 2 but I either I was doing something wrong or I had a lemon but I never got decent video from it.
I use a 60d. There is a Sony 4K camcorder for 2 grand I am looking to buy some time. 4K stock clips get a good price.
My GoPro Hero2 shoots very good video, of course not nearly as good as my Cannon HV40 (tape camera). The color saturation and picture quality looks like it was shot with a 3 chip pro camera.
Also consider the Panasonic GH-4, if you have Micro 4/3’s lenses.
If you have manual lenses most adapters are $20 on Ebay.
I’ve tried any number of video editors including Windows Movie maker. I found the restrictions on file types or their sheer complexity to be, well, extremely frustrating.
I’ve settled with ripping youtube videos using;
www.dvdvideosoft.com it’s free and works great.
If I need to convert a file type, I use; “Media Converter” that will convert virtually any file type into anything you need. Also, free.
For video editing and production I use “Serif” I started with the free version and it was easy to use, very intuitive and it works great. There were a few file type restrictions with the free version and I decided to upgrade to the paid version. Before I sent them any money I was able to actually talk to someone on the phone,(a competent guy in the UK) about exactly what I was paying for and whether there was a time limit etc on my upgrade. I found this to be very rare.
Serif works great, it’s not overly complex, they have tutorials that actually get to the point and you can call them.
It sounds like your processor can’t keep up with the footage, if it’s a really large file. Try updating your video card first and/or running any updates that Windows recommends from the Control Panel’s Windows Update.
Like you, I, too, LOVE the Spartan and highly effective “Media Converter” —even idiots can’t screw it up.
The price is right, too —free.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with your PC’s processing etc.
It’s Windows Movie Maker.
You can play a video in windows media player and that same video file may either not play in Movie Maker or you will only get the audio.
It’s retarded.
From what I understand, it’s a function of how windows saves these media files.
