Word For The Day, Tuesday August 19, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
wunderkind [voo n-der-kind, wuhn-; German voo n-duh r-kint]
1. a wonder child or child prodigy.
2. a person who succeeds, especially in business, at a comparatively early age.
[1890-95; < German, equivalent to Wunder wonder + Kind child]
salvaje [sahl-BAH-heh ]
Él ha estado actuando como un animal salvaje.
Hes been acting like a wild animal.
Neither Cleveland’s wunderkind nor Steny Hoyer looked too impressive at QB last night. Third stringer hit a Hail Mary on the last play to make it interesting though.
Don Pardo, RIP. He’s the one a generation pretends to be whenever they get on a microphone:
And a tune for the last week of summer:
back at my work station, tanned, rested and ready ; )
Are you sure about the “rested”? I always like to give myself a day or two to relax at home after traveling.
(see what happens when SAJ hasn't had his coffee yet?)
Obama, left-wing wunderkind
Wonder if he blundered, sinned
The country’s a mess
Scandals hidden under, spinned
You had me at tanned and rested.
I am going to be taking off a bit for the wedding, and we are going to London at the end of October, so I don’t really want to pee away my leave just resting. I rested plenty at the pool for the past week, so it seems kind of gratuitous to rest now. The only strenuous activity was the plane trip and I slept a solid 8 hours last night, so I feel fine.
love you truthy : )
my tanning hours were 7:30 am to 11 am or so. the sun is so strong and I was so worried about burning and peeling this close to the wedding that with 70 spf I look tan, and avoided all of those issues.
Many deluded folks thought of Obama as a wunderkind, and many since have been disabused of that quaint notion.
They just made the mistake of articulating what has been Fed policy since its inception. Accelerated now, of course. We’re at about 2 cents right now.
You know, I just saw a headline “Guess who’s behind the Perry indictment.” I didn’t click on it, but I said in my head “George Soros.”
Good thing to know my instincts are firing on all cylinders.
well wasn’t that a MISCUE on his part, since all he did was end up promoting Rick Perry in that RIDICULOUS incident. I saw on twitter there is an account named DRUNK DEMOcRAT and it has that woman’s mug shot as the avatar. hilarious.
Actually Colt McCoy (#3 Redskins) threw one of the best passes of the evening. Redskins D looked pretty good though
Hawaii this month, a big wedding next, then London in Oct - you have a busy few months!
Could you think of a more “Texas” name?
He truly frightens me
I guess the older franchises have fight songs? Seems like I’ve heard a few other songs -
Hail to the Redskins has been big forever, I guess I didn’t realize not all teams have songs?
Did you see manziel flip off the Redskins bench last night? They said he might be fined $50K - classy
I didn’t see it when it happened (I flip through on DVR), but saw the photo on Twitter.
We saw it and looked at each other and said surely he didn’t just flip someone off? My husband said he must have been signaling someone and thought it was his index finger.....but he taunted a lot during college games so it doesn’t surprise me
Jets fans like to spell their team’s name. I think that’s as sophisticated as they get.
I really hope he plays against Pittsburgh and tries something like that.
such a punk@$$ move. you’d think that with all of the bad rep he has for that kind of crap that he would attempt to rise above it.
Good one Al!
His wife is cuter than I thought she would be!
As I told my husband, a college team hopes to have a couple of stars each season, hopefully at least one on defense and one on offense - the rest are fillers. But once you get to the NFL, they should ALL have been stars. And, they are no longer worried about losing scholarships or getting kicked off the team. They won’t let anyone get away with some of that crap.
Ha - same deal here; I’ve pretty much not watched any of the challenges my FaceTard friends posted, save for Amy Freeze (weather forecaster i dig), some drunk’s from back in the Hegewisch bar days (I knew he would not disappoint), and Weird Al’s. Weird Al’s was good.
Humorist Frank J. Fleming: "If you dont #StandWithRickPerry, its probably because youre falling down drunk."
That is good -
I quipped on Twitter that I am waiting for this winter’s “boiling water challenge.”
With the type of winters you have, that might be welcome...well, maybe not boiling..
Yeah, I wunderwhatkinda quarterback he will make in the pro’s. Good in college, but too often seen running with one hand on the ball held out in the open?
We watch a lot of football - many teams - and often you will hear my husband or I screaming “protect that football” as they run holding it with one hand!
He was able to outrun most of the college players. That won’t be as easy in the bigs.
And switch it to the outside arm when running down the sideline.
Yes - we are so good as armchair players!! lol
I hate it when guys don't do that
So what is going on with the new rules this season? Does every penalty result in an automatic first down? I swear it seemed last night and this past weekend like every penalty, even a 5 yarder, was awarded a first down. And celebrating after a defensive play is taunting? lol Is this a new “anti bullying” device so we don’t hurt the players feelings?
I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. Then again, it’s preseason on the DVR, so I’m not paying a whole lot of attention to penalty calls. If they are cracking down on defensive holding, that could explain it. That’s always been 5 yards and automatic first down.
Yes, the No Fun League likes to penalize players who are happy with their performances.
Maybe it was all defensive holding, but I didn’t think it was - I will pay more attention when I can.
