Man seeks to divorce as he could not handle two wives at a time
An Arab man chased an Arab woman for more than a year to make her his second wife. However, the bride and her family were shocked at the end of the very first day of marriage when he said that he wanted to divorce her because he cannot handle two wives at a time.
Dubai-based lawyer Aisha Al Tunaigi, founding partner of Al Matrooshi and Al Tunaiji Law Firm in Dubai, told Emirates 24|7 that the man realised after the first night with his second wife that it was wrong as well as difficult for him to continue the relationship. He wanted to get back to his first wife as he was more comfortable with his life before the second marriage.
“He admitted that he was in love with his second wife. He also admitted that he chased her for more than a year and that his second wife and her family had refused his proposal in the beginning but after a year of his persistence and requests they had accepted his proposal because they saw how deeply in love he was and how committed he seemed to be for the new relationship. It was after the first day of marriage that the husband told his newly wed wife that the new situation is too difficult for him and that he cannot continue the marriage and he will divorce her the next day.”
“What happened to the second wife is not good,” she said and added, “from the beginning the man knew that he has a wife and family, and still he insisted on marrying another woman. It is not acceptable for him to change his mind after a day into marriage and decide to divorce her because he found it difficult to handle two wives at a time. What is the fault of the second wife? He has caused her and her family severe pain and shock.”
The lawyer said they receive similar cases where men marry second wives and divorce them after a short period of time. “Second marriage is not a game. It is as important as the first marriage and it must be taken seriously. It is not good to play with the lives of women and get them involved in second marriages to divorce them after a short period. Men should take second marriage more seriously,” said Tunaigi.
