Squeegee men are back and terrorizing city streets
New York Post ^ | August 7, 2014 | Erin Calabrese, Kathleen Culliton and Bruce Golding

They were the ultimate symbol of the lawlessness and blight of the 1980s and early 1990s — and now they’re making a comeback.

Squeegee men are menacing motorists across New York City, including spots near the Holland, Lincoln and Queens-Midtown tunnels, as well as the Queensboro Bridge, The Post has learned.

Residents and drivers who pass through the areas said the panhandlers are spraying and wiping windshields without permission to shake down drivers for cash.

Benthins, who has also been seen with a squeegee near Times Square, was using a wadded-up copy of the amNewYork free newspaper as a rag.

In the ’80s and ’90s, a couple of bad apples downtown would vandalize cars if you didn’t give them money.

“I haven’t seen those guys in 20 years. I’m a grandma now — the last time I saw one of them, my kids were in the car.”

“When I seen that one, I was f- -king shocked,” she added, noting he hides his squeegee gear and “pretends to direct traffic” whenever cops come by.

The resurgence of the squeegee scourge comes despite Mayor de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton’s publicly stated support for a continuing crackdown on “quality-of-life” crimes.

Bratton had run the squeegee men out of business during his first stint as top cop under Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who branded them a “menace” in his 1993 mayoral campaign.

A few well placed rounds would put a stop to that in short order.

I have no problem with that solution. In fact, I agree with it and eagerly encourage it.

Isn’t there some tool that can be kept in the rifle rack, to repel aggressive and threatening pests?

Are tasers, mace and tear gas allowed there? I know it is nearly impossible to legally carry a firearm or even an air gun there, but there has to be something.

I remember this as a kid growing up around Baltimore. A columnist in The Sun, Wiley Hall, referred to them as “young entrepreneur.”

This might be a chance to use the home-made dog repellant used by bicyclist

Get an atomizer (Spray bottle) and fill it with 7 or 8 drops of liquid dish washing soap, 2 table spoons of ammonia and top it off with tap water.

The stuff works like tear gas and will put even a large mean dog on the ground for 3 or 4 minutes. I have never used it on a person but Imagine the effect would be compatible. Put a mist of that into the eyes of anyone approaching your car and then ask them a dollar to spray them again.

If challenged by the police it is just soap.

New Yorkers getting what they deserve and deserving what they get.

Actually, they deserve a lot worse than what they getting but with De Blasio on it, things will soon reach the appropriate levels on the misery index

The “squeegee man” in the photo seems to be holding a Windex (ammonia) type cleaner.

Not nearly as bad the stuff you make. You want a couple of table spoons per pint not a few parts per million.

“I’d rather be doing this than to go back to what I was doing before Giuliani came into office: pimping . . . selling drugs, all that.

so what has he been doing since Giuliani came into office? since he left office?

“A few well placed rounds would put a stop to that in short order.”

I was thinking the city could even profit by that approach by requiring the purchase of a special hunting license and/or offering bounties.

Watch your filthy mouth, "grandma." You're old enough to have found some class by now.
