Here's a guy who pops a balloon from 1000 yards with a 9mm. Fact or fiction?

What’s the velocity of a 9mm at 1000 yards? The poor thing has to be down to it’s last few foot-lbs of energy.

You would have to. Gravity will not be mocked.

At 1,000 fps bullet takes 3 seconds to reach target.

Bullet begins to drop as soon as it leaves the muzzle.

Rate is 9.8 m/s2

So first second is 9.8 meters drop. About 10 yards

Yep.

This scenario is discussed every so often by (bored) shooters.

With a spotter, enough shots, and the right geography it could be done.

A video doesn’t have to show all the details :D

9mm can travel out to 2400 yrds fired at a 45 degree angle. The 147gr Hornady XTP’s he was shooting have a muzzle velocity of 975fps from a 4” barrel. So, assume low 1000-1100fps from a 6” barrel.

He’d still need to be putting a lot more elevation in his shot than the video suggests he has.

Jerry is one of the top shooters in the World. If anyone could make that shot, he could. However, I still smell shennanigans...

By the video, it took a little more than two seconds for the round to get to the balloon. Call it 2.4 seconds, which gives 1250 fps assuming no air friction.

Of course, friction is a major factor, which means the muzzle velocity must have been considerably more than 1250 fps.

A quick look at the specs for the Hornady XTP 9mm 147 grain cartridges he said he was using gives muzzle velocities in the range of 1000 fps.

That seems too low for what I saw. I would think that the muzzle velocity would have to be at least 1500 fps to have crossed 3000 feet in 2.4 seconds.

Actually, on watching it a second time, I would estimate the time at more like 2.1 seconds, which makes the discrepancy worse, not better.

However, it’s possible that editing on the video distorted the time delay.

Hornady 147gn XTP’s are spec’d at 975 fps muzzle velocity, 905 @ 50 yards, and 899 @100 yards. No doubt Jerry’s running custom loads, but 147 is a heavy 9mm. Soft shooting.

I assume the 3rd second has a much greater drop than the first second....

Initial drop 0 m/s
At 1sec, dropping at 9.8 m/s
At 2 sec, dropping at 19.6 m/s
At 3 sec, dropping at 28.4 m/s

Acceleration is constant at 9.8 m/s2
