The 25-year-old man was found dead with the TV on after the Netherlands beat Spain 5-1 on Friday.

According to reports, a Chinese World Cup fan who stayed up late to watch the coverage of the event has died from sleep deprivation.

The 25-year-old football fan was found slumped in front of his television at his home in Suzhou sometime after the Netherlands beat Spain 5-1 on Friday.

Due to an 11-hour time difference, World Cup games from Brazil are broadcast in China in the middle of the night.

The man was taken to People's Hospital of Xiangcheng and pronounced dead. Doctors at the hospital said the man's death "was linked to staying up late watching the games," China Daily reported.

Exhaustion or a heart attack also may have contributed to the man's death.

Doctors are warning fans in China to be "cautious about their health" while watching midnight matches.

I have insulated myself from this type of destruction my entire life with no effort whatsoever.

BS. If you can die from sleep deprivation there would not be a single doctor left alive. He died of something else while staying awake too long. Only way sleep deprivation kills is if you drive your car while exhausted.

I’d turn the World Cup on if I couldn’t sleep. I’d be out within minutes.

How does one die from sleep deprivation?
Obviously, chronic lack of sleep would contribute to numerous health problems, but one event? I do not see it.

25 yr old men do not die of “sleep deprivation.”

Pills, drugs, booze, caffeine (any or all of which may have induced a heart attack) — maybe.

My money is on an “overdose” of energy-type drinks.

The worst thing is, he (almost certainly) did himself in , just to stay up to watch...... soccer.

Oy.

Yes, that’s more likely. A kid I went to school with gave himself an ulcer taking too many caffeine pills to stay awake cramming for finals. People forget there is a limit to how many stimulants the body can take.

This is Chinese communist propaganda trying to deny the link between watching soccer and getting bored to death.

Agree. I don't believe it for a second. I worked grave shift for 14 years. You talk about sleep deprivation, I have experienced it first hand. This guy died from something else.

Shocked to hear that. I would have expected the cause of death to be boredom similar to the deaths in Kansas when people stay up for days at a time watching grass grow.

I watched about 10 minutes of Koreo vs Russia today after work at my local watering hole.

Though I was gonna die from boredom.

Its fun to watch little kids run back and forth kicking a ball. Adults...not so much
