I am a cynic. There are a lot of cynics here at FR. It's hard not to be a cynic in this day and age.

I will give up my cynicism when the world (and especially Washington D.C.) stops giving me reasons to be cynical.

I have a magnet on my refrigerator that says 'A cynic is a pessimist with a sense of humor.'
To: BBell
Optimist by temperament, pessimist by policy. Murphy doesn't take very many vacation days.

Who paid for this study? Studies just show what the funder wants them to show.
To: BBell
I’m in trouble.
Wait, what were we talking about?

So cynics are three times more likely to live to old age. /cynicism

I question the findings of this study. ;)

Believing that others are motivated by selfishness, or that they lie to get what they want, appears to radically increase the risk of cognitive decline in later life. So you either live longer and get suckered out of your money by scam artists because you don't believe people are greedy and lie, or you get dementia and get suckered out of your money anyway. Great.
(That doesn't sound cynical, does it?)

humm, a survey that includes “cynical,” untrusting people who nevertheless willingly provide personal, private information to strangers in white coats. ok. now, what could be wrong with this “study.” could the sampling itself be directly generating the studies’ result?
another very good reason to avoid answering all surveys and polls.

Bull$h!t. It’s equally valid to say that the approach of dementia causes a person to become cynical.

Maybe cynics don’t develop dementia so much as grow to match the world around them. It’s self preservation really.
