What about Detroit?
And Obama couldn’t give them a city.
0bama will no doubt get the games to Chicago.
Reading the bottom of the article the last two cities standing is the oil/gas driven despot with President for Life Nursultan Nazarbayev and once again the ChiComs. I’m surprised the ChiComs after spending reportedly around $50 billion US to host the Summer Games are willing to blow another $50 billion to host the Winter Games but hey they that nice piggy bank of a trillion or two of US Treasuries.
The Winter Olympics are so highly specialized, that’s it’s hard to recoup the investment made in infrastructure. I mean, the US can do it, but that’s mainly because we have such a large domestic tourism economy that even a niche market can be profitable.
The Summer Olympics at least have a shot at breaking even (or better) if managed competently because so much of the infrastructure is near major population centers and many of the event venues can be converted to other sports, convention centers, and the like afterwards that can see solid use beyond the games themselves.
My choices:
1. Gary, IN
2. East St. Louis, IL
3. Oakland, CA
Let the world see our rich and diverse culture.
I’ve often thought that there should be permanent venues for the Olympics, and that the facilities be used as training centers between events.
The only venue location that makes any sense to me is to always hold the Olympics in the same place. Send them back to Greece.
Next sporting organization that will have its comeuppance is the NCAA and high stake sports schools. This is what the football Unionization is about. A system that earns billions in TV revenue, pays coach exorbitant wages, but then doesn't feed its students enough for the caloric demands of a division I athlete.
Remember when Phoenix was denied the right to host the Winter Olympics because Arizona didn’t have a holiday to honor Martin Luther King? Well, that’s been taken care of, and Arizona now has such a holiday. So Phoenix, or better still, Yuma, should be the site of the next Winter Olympics.
The best bet would be to set up an “athlete games”, with low budget everything and grandstands at only millionaire prices, and pay per view.
No b.s. about amateur athletes, so professionals can join in. And individuals, as well as national teams, can compete.
One sport at a time, and only those sports that can support a paid audience. And a lot of those sports could be atypical, like extreme fighting and Kumite, professional style wrestling, swordfighting, and even ‘warfighting’ with real guns and blanks, and laser-tag casualties, calculated not just by uniform sensors but by real time computer analysis from overhead cameras.
Good for Krackow. Denver won the olympics back in the 70s, until the city went to the voters with the bill to pay for it. Then the city leaders got a shock that the citizens didn’t want the games, because they voted down the funding. Then Denver had to go back to the olympic committe and tell them they weren’t doing it after all. That still makes me proud.
Why not use the facilities already built, say Salt Lake City, Lake Placid etc?
In Chicago we gave a billionaire his taxpayer paid, custom built stadium for free and we get it back in 30 years. Yipee!
No true representative would do this to their client.
I got a field out back they could use if they’d promise to stay out of the barn.
