FORT HUACHUCA — Two people aboard a Cessna 500 — a two-seater aircraft — were injured in a 10 a.m. accident at the joint Libby Army Airfield and and Sierra Vista Municipal Airport, according to a post spokeswoman.

Both individuals were transported to medical facilities for treatment, with one being flown to a Tucson hospital and the other taken by ground transportation to the Sierra Vista Regional Health Center, fort media relations officer Tanja Linton said.

Their names and conditions were not available.

Michelle Fidler, spokeswoman for the National Park Service Intermountain Region, said Ponderosa Aviation in Safford has a contract with the Department of the Interior to provide aviation support, such as providing support during fire suppressions at parks, monuments, memorials and other national sites, including those in Cochise County.

During the time of the crash the company was not working any assignment for the National Park Service, Fidler said.

A spokesman for Ponderosa Aviation said until the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is completed there will be no comments from the company about the crash.

However, he said the two on the plane “are doing well.”

Fidler also said the National Park Service is waiting for “a factual conclusion” from the NTSB.

I assume that would be a Cessna 150, not a 500 unless I’ve really lost touch with private aviation.

Ummm....

A Cessna 500 is a Citation jet. Its not a “two seat single engine” like a 152.

Think the journalism major writing this crap is showing their typical complete and utter ignorance.

I just looked it up. I guess it is a Cessna Citation Jet but the jet seats more than 2, so I will assume it was a 150 like some other posters have said. Oh well, someone crashed and I hope they get well.

A local TV report describes it as a AC500S or Rockwell Aero Commander.

The Aero Commander AC500S, or Shrike Commander, was the aircraft legendary airshow performer Bob Hoover used for his amazing demonstrations.

Five people were killed in a crash of a Rockwell Commander operated by the same firm, Ponderosa Aviation, in November of 2011. I recall reading the accident reports shortly thereafter.

An Aero Commander would be a logical aircraft to support Interior Dept. activities on the ground. Neither a C-150 or Citation would really fit that role. Usually the press reports any small, non-transport category aircraft as a "Piper Cub."
