The Atlanta Braves have released new drawings of their planned 41,000-plus seat Cobb County stadium.
The images show a stadium with least four decks and a broad sun canopy with gathering places for fans. It also provides a glimpse of the design concepts behind the $400 million mixed-use complex planned to sit around the ballpark.
This is a very early look at how our vision is shaping up and, even though we are still months away from final plans and drawings, we are very pleased with the progress, said John Schuerholz, president of the Atlanta Braves. The renderings represent the sense of place we intend to create 365 days a year in addition to a world-class ballpark.
The Braves have also announced the launch of a waitlist for fans who are non-season ticket holders and who are interested in purchasing season tickets in the new ballpark. Current season ticket holders already receive top priority in securing season tickets for the new ballpark.
Nothing excites a politician like the computer simulated view of his new comp seats in the taxpayer funded sports palace!
You know, the major sports league should have had the foresight to think about this decades ago. Every team should have set aside 10% a year of their profits into a new ballpark or stadium. Even Green Bay's newly renovated Lambeau Field that had a half-percent sales tax, barely passed.
Where is this in Cobb co.?
The Pyramid Arean here in Memphis opened in 1991. About ten years later, the Memphis Grizzlies hit town and immediately, Michael Heisley wanted a new playground. He got his way and the FedEx Forum opened. The Pyramid closed shortly after the Forum opened. We were stuck with a huge, empty arena still unpaid for until Bass Pro bought it a few years ago. So why would the Braves want another playground when Turner Field is still fairly modern and state of the art? The taxpayers of Cobb County should tell Braves ownership to pound sand. Or tell them they’d be willing to pony up for a new crib if they get to get in free. See which alternative works out.
Windy Hill area
Why should they set aside 10% of their own money when they can steal it from taxpayers?
Yes Turner field was built for the Olympics. I was there its perfectly fine.
“Yes Turner field was built for the Olympics. I was there its perfectly fine.”
Not really? You know what the problem with Turner Field is? It’s in Atlanta.
While that sounds facetious, the fact is, the Braves did several studies to see where their actual ticket-buying fans were coming from... the ones that actually shelled out cash for games.
If you haven’t figured it out yet, they were overwhelmingly white, and from the outer Atlanta suburbs. And they were buying fewer tickets every year. Yes, Atlanta crime is part of that. So, they decided to go to where the paying customers are. It doesn’t excuse making taxpayers pay for the stadium, but the Braves had good reason to move. In 20 years, Atlanta will be Detroit with humidity.
Turner Field was built adjacent to the old Braves stadium. People have been going to see the ball games in that crime infested area for 40 years or more.
I thought they should have built turner field in the burbs in the 90’s. Many people dont’ want it out near them because of the traffic and crime that will follow it. If you live in Atlanta you know what I mean.
Downtown Atlanta is already a mess you won’t have to wait 20 years.
Who the hell pays for all these stadiums in Atlanta every few years?
Nice... now how much is the taxpayers of Georgia on the hook for?
“Yes Turner field was built for the Olympics. I was there its perfectly fine.”
No, Turner Field was built after the Olympic arena was torn down after one use
We’re still playing at good old Fenway-—why don’t the Braves just renovate?
.
BTW..what are they going to do with the Georgia Dome?
The last I saw the Atlanta Braves play it was in Fulton County stadium and Hank Aaron hit #700. I’m getting old.
I have a lot of great memories of my Dad and me at the old Fulton County stadium. Clete Boyer on 3rd and Joe Torre batting cleanup. Hank Aaron and the Alou brothers. Those were baseball players. I felt pretty sad the day they tore the old stadium down.
Looks pretty boring
Fenway looks all of 1919. They need to rebuild it. If nostalgia's an issue, keep the wall and the rest of the field dimensions the same.
