Half of cancer sufferers will be 'cured' (Can expect to survive for at least 10 years)

Half of patients diagnosed with cancer today will effectively be “cured” according to the authors of new research, which shows survival rates in England and Wales have doubled since the 1970s.

Experts hailed the landmark findings as a “tipping point” in the war on cancer, and said dramatic improvements in diagnosis and treatment meant the disease could soon be treated as a chronic condition, instead of a death sentence.

The landmark study of 7 million cancer patients suggests that 50 per cent of patients diagnosed today can expect to survive for at least 10 years - by which point their prognosis is as good as that of those without the disease.

Forty years ago, less than one quarter of patients survived a decade, the data from Cancer Research UK shows.

Charities said the trends showed a rapid acceleration in survival, and said they were “confident” of major strides ahead, announcing new ambitions to achieve 75 per cent survival within 20 years.

So, ya find a lump and call your doctor.......you get an appointment for November. You'll be lucky to last that long.

Obamacare will destroy survival rates.

You could double the survival rate in England/Wales simply by having the NHS see/treat patients within days of their first attempt at an appointment... instead of making them wait for months.

Once cancer sufferers survive a decade, they are no more likely to die of the disease than anyone else, researchers said.

and yet i keep reading about, hearing about how those who survive one type of cancer end up getting another type of cancer... it's called "second cancer..."

It’s a business. There is no business interest to find any easy cure.

who survive one type of cancer

My mother was diagnosed at the earliest stage of colon cancer and had surgery. Four years later she developed a tumor on her kidney which was removed (kidney too). About 8 years after that, more colon surgery. Then a tumor on her lung which was removed. The oncologist said they were all the same cancer (original colon cancer) but developed in different places. Finally, 19 years after her first surgery, her body was full of tumors (the doc/hospital told me that they had never seen so many tumors) and she died.

So she was a "survivor" in the sense that she went a full 8 years with nothing discernible but she was never "cured".

They aren’t quite being truthful.

Many “cancers” are being diagnosed today that may not be true cancer or act like true cancer. We don’t know how many “cures” are true cures or just treating something that would not have come to attention without newer technology.
