Maryland Puts Up Roadblocks to Online Ed
The American Interest ^ | 04/17/2014 | Walter Russell Mead

Posted on 04/18/2014 8:13:18 AM PDT by Rusty0604

After explaining how Maryland regulates out-of-state providers, the letter presents them with three options: Confirm that the institution enrolls students in Maryland, then pay an annual registration fee of $1,000 and a bond valued at five times the average cost of tuition; confirm that the institution is interested in enrolling students in Maryland, and pay the same fee; or decline any interest in enrolling students in Maryland, thereby barring those students from enrolling altogether. [...]

According to the letter, recipients have until April 25 to respond—even if they don’t enroll students in Maryland. [One] provost therefore described the letter as “the most aggressive attempt to date by any state government to enforce state authorization.”

On top of this, Maryland requires that online education programs undergo a lengthy accreditation review process, and now it seems to be vying for the title of least hospitable state in the union. (Meanwhile, the Department of Education is pursuing its plan to reinstate the requirement that distance education programs obtain accreditation in all states where they do business.)

The motives behind Maryland’s new restrictions couldn’t be clearer, according to Inside Higher Ed. The state wants to stifle programs that compete with the online programs offered by the University of Maryland University College. UMUC has already seen layoffs this year due to declining enrollment. With more than 34,000 students, it is an asset that the state will fight to defend.

Gov't employees union on display again protecting themselves. At the same time the Democrats want more money to educate our young for jobs. They want to force them to take out big student loans (backed by taxpayers) to continue paying high university employees wages and pensions. Allowing the serfs to get and education without going into debt just won't do.

Actually, most of the "college education" in this country could be recorded once, and then put on Youtube.

"Higher education" is now no different than the "university bookstore" racket.

lol so true
I am all for on-line ed in principle
but maybe because of my age (mid-50s) a
little skeptical about the diploma being
legitimate.

The diplomas are not legitimate NOW.

The universities are being used as an indoctrination factory for the Left.

That is not unions that are attempting that. It is the Administrators and Legislators attempting to protect their
golden goose.

With less students Most Educational Institutions get less state and federal dollars.

Heaven forbid Administrators making 6 or 7 figure salaries have to take a cut...

I don’t see how baring online studies could work. It reminds me most of how the country of Turkey tried to bar Twitter, and then had to give up as people posted ways to get around it.

20 years from now, will we still need/want huge (physical) universities? I don’t know, but it seems debatable.

A person that worked for me once got an online accounting degree, and since that is my degree she would ask me to help her. I was surprised at how easy it was. Learning math formulas was not required, and the principles of finance and accounting were not discussed in any depth.

However the university’s degree may be little better these days, and they are only interested in getting the dollars.

I’m speaking from my experience with a union in CA that represented some community colleges. It’s all about the money for the Administrators and unions.

“20 years from now, will we still need/want huge (physical) universities? I don’t know, but it seems debatable.”

Although a tradition college degree is still required for, say an engineering job, increasingly employers also demand an independent company certification in the area. For example, you need a PM certificate from PMI or another outfit to be considered for a program manager’s job. You need a QE or similar cert from somebody like ASQC for most quality jobs. This is because college degrees have been devalued. Colleges are pumping out graduate who don’t have the first clue about being whatever their degree says they are.

Here’s how I see it happening. Twenty years from now you’ll work towards and pay for a certificate from a private company that says you took and passed a test in x field and that you’re taking continuing credits(and paying that company) to maintain that certificate.

Most colleges as we know them will either be competitive or out of business. The government/college industrial scam will be relegated to history. People with degrees from defunct organizations will still be required to take a test and get a private certificate.

We don't need them NOW.

You could probably eliminate half the universities in the country inside 3 years, and reduce the size of the others by three-quarters.

It's just that "it's ALWAYS been this way".

And we need not worry. Our educational system has failed so many kids we don’t have enough with real skills for good jobs, so our politicians are going to open up the gates for immigrants to take their place.

I have been impressed by engineers from central America, from countries whose entire budget is less than Florida’s education budget. One spent his first ten years in a multi-grade dirt floored hut. His English, grammar, writing and math skills were second to none. When I asked about it, he said his parents made him work on them every night, telling him they were the keys to his future. I contrast that with American college graduates who seem functionally illiterate and have poor reasoning abilities. But they know all about how bad America has been to the world. They appreciate diversity, but can’t define it. I’m sure they can put on a condom blindfolded.

You talking your book?

The buggy-whip manufacturers were all hot & bothered about the advent of the automobile, also.

I really don't see the need for the current university infrastructure, ESPECIALLY now that the Video Children are maturing. The VC are used to learning from a video screen.

Probably the biggest reason that "educators" won't go there, or explore the possibilities, is the SWEET pay, health bennies, hours & retirement benefits that they have now.

My view of people like that is that they're self-serving scum, and bloated tax-ticks.

Looks like Krystal (not her stripper name) was auditioning so enthusiastically for the college football team that she whacked her noggin on the headboard, and her brains leaked out.

He wasn't "found guilty". He lost a court case.

She was a salutatorian in high skool? And she went to TWO "kollidges"???!!?

Tells you what the "educational standards" are in the Lefty De-Education Centers.

To your point about the condom: there's a picture of Krystal (not her stripper name) at an Xmas (that, for her Godless "crew") party, where she's pretending that a guy who is dressed as Rudolf, complete with strap-on red nose, actually has a phallus strapped on his nose, and she's doing what comes naturally to her type.

The semi-literate ho is probably making 6 figures working for PMSNBC...

What does that have to do with self-serving scum & bloated tax ticks proclaiming that "the earth is flat" because it serves their self-interest?

And you posted something from The New Left Times to prove your point? I'm sure Pinch is all for closing the universities...
