Mr Goddard was anxious to stress that he had undergone several psychiatric examinations since his difficulties started – and had always been given a clean bill of health.

Well that's a relief. He's officially not nuts for chopping off his own hand with a homemade guillotine.

He's as normal as that Abby guy.

Well, being in pain for years under socialized medicine can make anyone go crazy.

Before my spinal surgery I suffered a pinch nerve in my neck. Sometimes the pain would be so bad that I’d put my whole arm in a big bowl of ice. The pain of the ice water canceled out the pain of the screaming nerve and gave me some relief.

The only reason I took amputation out of the list of possibilities is that it wouldn’t stop the pinched nerve problem at my neck. There is a procedure where they cut and cauterize the nerve root itself and I begged for this procedure. “But it’ll paralyze your arm!”

“I don’t care.”

Thankfully, the spinal surgery took the pressure off the nerve and it’s alright now. But don’t discount how bad it can be. And don’t discount the lengths people will go to if the pain is bad enough.
