My question is ... What are we doing in the Black Sea, and when did it start?
To: OldNavyVet
As I understand it, this was scheduled quite a while back.

Routine exercise; it’s been planned for awhile.

Don’t forget that Romania is a member of NATO, and has ports on the Black Sea.

My understanding is that one US destroyer got permission from the Turks to go in for “a pre-planned training operation.” Frankly, I’m concerned. If we’re not prepared to fight, and under this president I can’t believe we would be, then we need to keep our assets out of harm’s way.
Fighting with a nuclear armed state is crazy. Note how aggressive we’ve been with North Korea, who sank our “ally’s” warship. We sent a mild note deploring their behavior. (Oh, Scarrrry.)

The smaller ships go to the Black Sea quite often, but capital ships like aircraft carriers stay in the Med.

I’m no navy expert, goodness knows, but might part of the reason be to evacuate Americans in Ukraine/Crimea (if there are any) in case of major fighting...?
