Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has sacked the head of the armed forces, Col Gen Volodymyr Zamana, according to the president's website.
The move comes after the most intense violence in Ukraine's three-month crisis turned Kiev into a battle zone.
Earlier the state security service announced it was launching a nationwide "anti-terrorist" campaign to deal with a growing "extremist threat".
There was a suggestion the armed forces could be deployed for the first time.

and that shouldn’t sit well with the troops. So do we get to see Soviet tanks rolling in to ‘support’ this government like we did in 1968???
George put in a lot of money last year, hoping to stir up trouble. The rights and wrongs of the situation are not as easy to tell as one might wish, but it’s telling that Soros’ money went to the rebels.
I would bet any officer ordering troops to open fire faces a 50-50 chance of being shot by his own men.
I do wonder if there’s a betting house somewhere in London that is taking odds on how this crisis will be resolved
