Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" Censored by the local classic rock station...
105.9 FM ^ | 2/18/14 | sff

105.9 FM is the local classic rock station in south Florida.....just a few minutes ago, I was bored with everything else on the radio and hit that station...just in time to hear the beginning of the hit "Money for Nothing"...

Imagine my surprise when the lyric got to: "That little faggot with the earring and the mink coat, Yeah, buddy, thats his own hair. That little faggot got his own jet airplane. That little faggot is a millionaire!"

Funny lines....but the dreaded "slur" was clipped out! Absurd.

Anyway, since I RARELY listen to music radio, I was wondering if this song has been suffering from the politically correct hacks for a long time? Or is it just a phenomenon of the rabidly liberal Miami media?

They’re really going to have to butcher this “Ten Years After” classic, “I’d love to change the world”

Everywhere is freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity
tax the rich, feed the poor
‘Till there are no rich no more

I heard this song on the radio just last week, offending word intact. I was actually surprised to hear the word, as I figured it would have been verboten by now. It was on a classic rock station out of Baltimore.

True story:

A pilot I flew with was at an FBO in NC and noticed one of the ladies behind the counter had a picture of Elton John just laying there. My friend tapped the picture with his finger and said, “Is that Elton John? He’s an ol’ faggot, ain’t he?”

The blood drained from the lady’s face and her mouth dropped open. My friend felt a hand on his shoulder, turned and looked down and there was Elton John, just smiling away. My friend just stood there, too shocked to say anything and Elton John, still smiling, said, “You Southern boys will never change” and walked away.

I have Blazing Saddles, it is not edited. The bean scene, sound effects and all is there too. On TV, they edit out the fart sound. Why?! Fart sounds are “bad” in silly humor?.

I wonder if in England if they still ask for a fag? (Their word for cigarette.) An acquaintance visited years ago with her husband, a citizen. He asked my husband if he had a spare fag. PARDON ME?! -was his reply. There was a lot of laughter after having the term explained.

Don't let him read the lyrics to "Take Me to the Pilot"!

I tried to tell our kids that vulgarity and swearing was a poor substitute for thoughtful speech. Far better to strive for creative verbal expression than injecting meaningless profanity into the conversation IMO.

Thank goodness that Frank Zappa (rest his soul) doesn’t get any significant airplay. Just imagine the furor that would ensue if a radio station dared to play “Bobby Brown” or “He’s So Gay.”

“I have seen those....some black lesbian actress is in them.”

Wanda Sykes. She’s alledgedly a comedienne, and IMO the evidence that she is a comedienne is sorely lacking.

And most of them don’t know, or choose to ignore, that the song’s composer was black.

I remember one radio station here where I lived used to play the uncensored version of “You Oughtta Know.” Not sure if they got in trouble.

That station has since changed formats a couple times.

Or “When The Whip Comes Down”. (I was gay in New York, but a fag in LA)

They just played this song a moment ago on our local station and it was the original lyrics. :)

I remember hearing there was a line in the Kinks’ “Well Respected Man” that caused a bit of a stir here in the States:

“And he likes his fags the best...”

No kidding.

I’ve heard the unedited version on the radio a time or two.

"He doesn't want to get caught up in any of the funky (sh!t) stuff going down in the city"

Heh, I always wait until the end of the song to hear if it says "$hit" or "funky kicks" going down.

My wife and I were listening to Rod Stewart's "Hot Legs".

I said, have you ever heard the last line?

She didn't know that he says: "Are you pu$$y whipped?"

It's as the song is fading out, and you can't hear it very loudly, but I've never heard it edited.

Yup and on a live Kinks album Ray Davies did a spoken bit where he mentioned that line from the song (got a laugh) and how one day an effeminate-sounding cop went up to him and asked, “Excuse me...are you Ray Davies”, and Ray said “yes, what’s yours?”-—”L-O-L-A, Lola,” (though he went into a diff. song, “Destroyer” maybe...

How about the other line, "banging on the bongo like a chimpanzee"? That one always cracked me up.

I've heard it censored on some stations, left whole and pure on others.

It sure is a great song, and Mark Knopfler is a fabulous guitarist.
