Despite a growing backlash against it, blackface is still popular in Germany, where people insist they aren't racist

With Karneval ready to kick off later this month, many in Germany are picking out their festive getups and preparing to drink as much Hefeweizen as humanly possible. Unfortunately, some of the costume ads—like this one, eloquently titled “Gaylord Afro Wig, Wet Look for Men”—invite revelers to dress up in blackface.

Black face is also popular in Japan. One of Japan’s elite Doo-wop groups with popular following, Rats&Stars, frequently has performed in black face. Sunday afternoon gatherings where Japanese young men gather to imitate 50s American rock-a-billy and young hood dancing also have people show up in black face.

Europe will always be racist in a gentle way until that basic feeling is unleashed as it was in the 1914’s in Bosnia and in the 1940’s in Germany, France and other European countries.

It’s just human nature — that’s why muslims want to be among muslims, Christians among Christians, Hutus among Hutus and conservatives among conservatives and Texans among Texans.

The only difference between the US and Europe is — they don’t have an NAACP.
