Staff at a Danish zoo where a healthy giraffe was put down have received death threats as debate rages online over the killing, which took place despite a petition signed by thousands of animal lovers.
Several staff members were targeted after the animal, named Marius, was shot Sunday, Copenhagen Zoo spokesman Tobias Stenbæk Bro told CNN on Monday.
The Copenhagen Zoo said it "euthanized" Marius to avoid inbreeding. A veterinarian shot Marius with a rifle as he leaned down to munch on rye bread, a favorite snack. After an autopsy the giraffe was dismembered in front of an audience that included children and fed to the zoo's lions, tigers and leopards.

They couldn’t give the baby to another zoo?
I am as conservative as they come, but that sickened me.
Now, if they had fed Pelosi to the lions...it would have delighted me, but sickened the lions.

This was plain sick and stupid. To add insult to injury, they did in front of guests....many of whom were children. Brillant, those Danes.
The genes of that giraffe were already common in the European gene pool.
Perhaps they should have just released the lions into the giraffe pen and let the public see how nature does it.
The zoo admits they dispose of 20-30 animals a year — nobody complained about the antelopes, wild boar and others. What makes this so different? The media, mainly.
I doubt it’s much different in zoos across the world. The whole thing is a trumped up non-story, as most “human interest” items are.

The zoo leadership would rather kill it than sell it to another accredited zoo that had a space for it.

Uh...they'd just shot the beastie in the head with a rifle. What did they expect to find in the autopsy, a heart attack? Shingles? Irritable bowel syndrome?
