he state's attorney report on the horrific murders at the Sandy Hook Elementary School by shooter Adam Lanza found no "conclusive motive" for his actions but did document unsettling facts about the 20-year-old killer, including computer files he kept on the rights of pedophiles, a movie about man/boy love, instant messages concerning "homosexual fantasies," numerous mass murder documents, and a computer game entitled "School Shooting."

This event only gets uglier and more heavily layered with the passage of time. Only his dad knows the truth: was he prevented from having any contact with his son because of his ex wife, because his child refused to talk to him, or did Mr. Lanza just give up in frustration? We will never know how much sexual abuse was to blame, unless the brother speaks up.

Chris Bross is a senior engineer at Drive Savers — a company which tries to recover data from erased or damaged hard drives. He told NBC News that in his two decades on the job, he has successfully extracted information from hard drives damaged intentionally by being hit with a hammer, shot or run over with a car.

“It’s actually difficult to successfully destroy data to an absolute level,” he explains. “What we do in a laboratory is engineering work. There’s always opportunity for recovery from a storage device unless that device has been extremely damaged.” He confirms that, “if the platters have been shattered, then there’s no tangible way to put together data from that.” But if the platters are partially chipped, scratched, or similar? There’s still a chance.
