This event only gets uglier and more heavily layered with the passage of time. Only his dad knows the truth: was he prevented from having any contact with his son because of his ex wife, because his child refused to talk to him, or did Mr. Lanza just give up in frustration? We will never know how much sexual abuse was to blame, unless the brother speaks up.

They divorced in 2009 and from reading reports it appears that Peter Lanza wasn’t kept from visiting his son.

Connecticut court records show Nancy Lanza ticked ‘yes’ for financial disputes but ‘no’ for parenting disputes as reasons for the split.

The couple had arranged a joint custody agreement for Adam, who was 17 at the time of their divorce.

As part of this parental agreement, Adam was to live primarily with his mother and Peter was allowed ‘liberal visitation and vacations.’

Investigators snapped photos of the birthday greeting sent along by Peter Lanza to his son.

“Adam, Happy Birthday,” read the hand-written message inside the card, which also didn’t have a date. “Send me an e-mail when you want to go hiking or shooting.”

The nurse said in her police interview that Lanza had been diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder and was ‘emotionally paralyzed’, changing his socks 20 times a day.

Despite this his mother had stopped giving him the medication and failed to schedule follow up visits
