Weve known for some time that Nelson Mandela was a member of the South African Communist Party. It was hard for fawning liberals to acknowledge the meaning of his membership, so they came up with a narrative explaining it. Their story went something like this: He only briefly joined to get the benefit of their organizational talent, and his membership was rather symbolic, and hardly meaningful. What is important is his steadfast commitment to non-violence, his adherence to political democracy, and the role he played after emerging from prison in the waning days of apartheid.

Mandela’s commie past was only secret because the MSM has been consciously avoiding reporting on it.
no secret....EVER!
always knew it....if people didn’t know it, then they fit right in with the uninformed voters who put the current POSOTUS into the White Hut.....

There’s nothing “secret” abut Mandela’s communist past. Ted Cruz must have been absent from college the day it was taught!
Name your tyrant, and there are tens of millions of Americans who endorse that tyrant.
Fixed...'Christmastime in Hell' Stone/Parker
The communist past of Mandela and the ANC was unknown only to the willfully blind.
Everything and everybody that the establsihment media pushes is a complete sham. Take that to the bank.
The left is always committed to peace, and they’ll kill everyone to prove it !
If Mandela’s communist past was a secret, it was the worst kept secret in history.
And of course, once you understand that, then you begin to understand how entrenched the "commie" passions are that are lurking in the heart of the MSM.
I will add a couple more comments. Rian Malan, the journalist quoted in the article is as lefty lib as they come, and he continues to deny the logical conclusions of Mandela being a communist, however much we’ve seen that play out in the “new” South Africa.
The other thing I always wonder is if these authors have actually been to Africa, and seen first-hand what goes on there. Malan, for example, left South Africa in 1977. Refined western culture and behavior has no place there, yet Mandela and his ilk are measured and revered against that point of view, while real African behavior and culture is swept under the carpet.
But he helped that South African rugby team? Surely, he wasn’t a communist.
It has to have been one of the worst kept secrets ever because most of the world has know this for two decades or more.
