Belichick on Wes Welker: 'It was a deliberate play ... to take out Aqib'
CBS Sportsline ^ | 1-20-14 | By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

For the second-straight season, the loss of Aqib Talib during the AFC title game affected the way the Patriots defense played the rest of the game, and not coincidentally, New England, without its No. 1 cornerback, lost to the Ravens last year and to the Broncos on Sunday.

As soon as Talib, who collided with Wes Welker while trailing Demaryius Thomas on a crossing route, was injured and had to leave the game, Denver quarterback Peyton Manning begin targeting Welker and cornerback Devin McCourty.

On Monday, Belichick said in his postseason press conference that Welker -- Belichick's former player who contributed mightily to New England for many seasons, mind you -- deliberately hurt Talib.

"The way that play turned out, I went back and watched it, which I didn't have a chance to [Sunday]," Belichick said Monday morning, via ESPN Boston. "It was a deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib. No attempt to get open. I'll let the league handle the discipline on that play, whatever they decide. It's one of the worst plays I've seen."

The video shows Welker looking directly at Talib. It was a pick play that many teams do including the Patriots.

As a Raider fan, there’s nothing better than watching Brady and the Pats lose...

Well you can’t block him as that would be an illegal pick play. Looks to me like they were running crossing routes at 5 and 7 and the DB was too deep and Welker ran into him coming out of his cut. I’d have to see the the full play to know exactly what route Welker was running.

Regardless, Belichick is a whiny bitch.

You can’t block before a Reception. That’s A) Offensive Interference or B) A Pick.

You're one of the few here familiar with the rules.

LOL. I’m petty. The Colts legacy should be in Baltimore. Like I said, for him, my dislike is but an accident of birth. I don’t like Elway either, I believe his threats to leave football and play baseball instead of going to the then Baltimore Colts, was a factor is the Colts getting out of town.

It’s just part of the baggage I carry having been born and spending my early years in sight of the lights at Memorial Stadium.

Belicheck is a horse’s patoot. And I don’t have a dog in this fight....

But he looks to be right. Welker never looked back for the ball. He had Talib sized up for 10 yards. Was he trying to hurt him? Don’t know. But was not there to catch the ball, that is for sure. BTW, for those of you who don’t know, that is a pick play. Illegal if he hits Talib before the ball gets there.

Oh, I know about pick plays - everybody - included the Pats - do them. But in the GIF above, I really don’t see Welker lining up anybody... except maybe at the last second before impact. Certainly wasn’t like he dove low and chopped Aqib’s knees, which is pretty much what Belichick accused him of doing.

>>> Don’t see it in any other NFL coach........

You’ve got that right.

IF there is a gripe yesterday, it should have been Harbaugh.

Contrast that Harbaugh post game interview vs Belichick.

NO CLASS. Worst as a head coach, he sets the tone for his organization.

It is illegal for a receiver to block a defensive back down field on a pass play with the ball in the air. It is like a pick in basketball, which is legal. It appears that Welker made no attempt to run a pass route.

Looks to me like he lined himself up to run into the patriot player well in advance.

Do you have an video of New England video taping the RAMS practice or stealing signals?

You do know that every team attempts to steal signals, right? Have you noticed that every coach covers his mouth with a sheet of paper during games, to prevent lip-reading?

When the Jets lodged their complaint against Belichick, what Belichick was doing was against league policy. It was a violation of the rules, and just plain stupid.

But two months prior, EVERY team was doing this. That's why the commissioner sent out a letter telling EVERY team to stop. Belichick didn't stop.

Yes, what he did was wrong, but it was not the end of the world, as some people make it out to be.

And if you haven't noticed, they've had a pretty good record since "Spygate."

Yes and nobody in the NHL ever does anything to stretch the rules, or makes a mistake.

They are professionals after all. I mean cmon belichick is the poster boy of following the rules.

right?

On the Drudge Report website, they are calling this the “Pot Bowl”. Now that’s funny stuff....

The worst part about whiny Bellicheck/Bellicheat is that I read somewhere he’s a conservative. He’s one guy I would not mind finding out is a raving socialist lefty.

All offensive players are prohibited from blocking defensive players past the line of scrimmage during a pass play until the pass is caught.

In a pick play, two receivers run paths that cross each other. In doing so, one receiver “accidentally” blocks the person defending the other receiver. This leaves the other receiver wide open to catch a pass.

Exactly. Belichick and his players think winning is their due. They don’t know HOW to lose.

Suck it up, Belichick!

You know... the block occurred at almost the same time the ball got to the receiver. And the receiver was already wide open. Would be tough to call it a pick play. And the block was in the guys waist. Wasn’t at the head. Wasn’t at the knees. It’s football. Can’t take it... can’t play in the NFL.

Caught or tipped.

I think that can be classified as a pick but only by a fraction of a second. The block was about as soft as you could get in the given circumstances. It was shoulder to shoulder and Welker looked like he got the worst of it. How did Talib even injure his knee on that play?
